Albert Pujols is off to a slow start, but a three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates could change that in a hurry.

The St. Louis Cardinals wouldn't mind some production from the three-time NL MVP as he looks to continue his dominance of the visiting Pirates on Monday night.

Pujols went 2 for 13 with a solo homer and grounded into four double plays as St. Louis opened the season by losing two of three to San Diego at Busch Stadium.

The nine-time All-Star was 0 for 4 in the series finale Sunday, but the Cardinals won 2-0 behind Jaime Garcia's four-hitter.

Pujols is in ideal position to shake his slump. The first baseman is a .374 lifetime hitter against Pittsburgh. His 134 RBIs versus the Pirates are his most against any opponent and his 45 homers are two fewer than his production against the Chicago Cubs.

He's batted a whopping .458 with six homers and 16 RBIs in his last 20 home meetings with the Pirates, and is 4 for 10 off their scheduled starter, Charlie Morton.

While Pujols tries to regain his stroke, Kyle Lohse is looking to regain the form that produced a career-high 15 wins in 2008 -- his first season with St. Louis. The right-hander has totaled 10 wins since while struggling with various injuries. He went 4-8 with a 6.55 ERA in 18 starts last year.

However, Lohse turned in a productive spring training, allowing five runs in 24 innings over five starts.

"He's already proven to us when he's healthy he's a quality pitcher," manager Tony La Russa told the Cardinals' official website. "He's healthy, and we have to keep him healthy, and he'll be fine. Then we have to do the rest of the stuff, play defense and score some runs."

Lohse is 5-1 with a 3.41 ERA in 10 games versus Pittsburgh.

The Pirates are off to a solid start after taking two of three at Chicago. They rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to earn a 5-4 victory Sunday.

Pittsburgh center fielder Andrew McCutchen missed the series finale due to a stiff neck stemming from a diving attempt at a fly ball Saturday. His status is unclear for Monday.

McCutchen has a .345 average with nine doubles and 13 runs over his last 16 meetings with the Cardinals, and is 8 for 19 in his last five games in St. Louis. He's 4 for 9 with two doubles off Lohse.

That sort of production might be essential with Morton on the mound. The right-hander went 2-12 with a 7.57 ERA in 17 starts last season.

"Any opportunity I get, I want to make the best of it," Morton said. "I honestly can say that I did everything I could last year, but what I was doing just didn't work. I think we've worked on some things and made some adjustments."

One of Morton's victories came against the Cardinals and Lohse on Sept. 22, when he allowed two runs and four hits in six innings while McCutchen went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored in Pittsburgh's 11-6 home win.

Lohse lasted just three innings and was tagged for six runs and seven hits.

The Pirates have dropped eight of their last nine games in St. Louis.

Price looks to gain sole possession of the AL wins lead when the Rays open a three-game series at Detroit on Monday night.

Since being alone atop the AL East after a 6-4 win over Minnesota on Tuesday, Tampa Bay (67-44) has hit .149 in losing five in a row to fall behind New York in the division chase.

The Rays have been no-hit twice this season.

"I was beginning to think no-hitters were kind of commonplace," said third baseman Evan Longoria, who broke up Morrow's no-hit bid with two outs in the ninth. "It seems like we've been a part of and watched so many this year."

Price (14-5, 2.82 ERA) will need some help to stop Tampa Bay's losing streak. The All-Star left-hander didn't get much Wednesday, allowing one run while striking out seven in seven innings of a 2-1, 13-inning loss to the Twins. The Rays managed five hits.

The lack of production cost Price a chance to become the AL's first 15-game winner. He's tied with Minnesota's Carl Pavano and New York's CC Sabathia for the lead in victories, and his ERA is among the lowest in the AL.

Price may be in good position to take over the wins lead as he faces Detroit (54-57).

The Rays swept a four-game home set with the Tigers from July 26-29, with Price capping the series with a 4-2 win. He allowed two runs and struck out nine in 6 1/3 innings.

He has gone 2-0 with a 1.65 ERA in four games -- two starts -- against Detroit.

The Tigers are trying to win consecutive games for just the second time since a five-game winning streak July 5-10. They are 6-20 since and have fallen out of the Central race.

Detroit is coming off a 9-4 victory over Los Angeles on Sunday, ending a four-game slide in which it scored eight runs.

The Tigers will give the ball Armando Galarraga (3-4, 4.32), who has gone 1/3 with a 5.48 ERA in his last eight starts.

The right-hander allowed four runs and walked five in 7 2/3 innings of a 4-1 loss to Chicago on Wednesday. Manager Jim Leyland feels that a lack of confidence is playing a part in Galarraga's troubles.

"I think Galarraga is a perfect example of a guy that his stuff is better than he trusts at times," Leyland told the team's official website. "And I think when he learns to trust his stuff a little bit more, he'll be even better. And I think with him, the more he starts to believe in his stuff, the better he'll be. If he doesn't, he's going to have problems."

Galarraga has gone 1-0 with a 6.35 ERA in three starts against the Rays. He lasted 2 1/3 innings in his most recent matchup with them Sept. 5, surrendering six runs and walking three in an 8-6 win.

It's the Baltimore Orioles' staff, though, that has placed Chicago's hold on sole possession of first place in the AL Central in jeopardy.

Jackson will make his second start for the White Sox as they close a four-game series against the Orioles on Monday night.

Chicago (63-48) needed to fill a major void in its rotation after losing Jake Peavy to season-ending shoulder injury last month. Jackson made his Chicago debut Wednesday against one of his former teams. Facing Detroit, the right-hander allowed one run, nine hits, one walk and struck out six over seven innings of the 4-1 win.

"He was throwing 98 (mph) -- I didn't know he threw that hard," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "But great pitching like that is the reason we got him."

The win also snapped a personal four-game losing streak in which Jackson had a 7.25 ERA.

Monday's start will be critical for Jackson as he tries to help his new club split a four-game series against the major league-worst Orioles. The White Sox are trying to build momentum before playing six of their next nine against Minnesota, which trails Chicago by a half-game.

Jackson has won his last four starts against the Orioles, giving up two runs and five hits over 16 innings in the last two.

However, Jackson may not get much support as Baltimore's starting pitching has been hot during the series.

The Orioles (37-74) posted a 4-3 win Sunday, their fifth in six game under new manager Buck Showalter as Felix Pie homered and Jeremy Guthrie gave up one run in eight innings. Baltimore's starters are 3-0 with a 1.94 ERA and each has gone six innings under Showalter.

"It's not like these guys have never pitched well this year," he said. "And they seem to be feeding off each other."

Chicago, which scored 23 runs during four games at Detroit last week, has totaled eight against the Orioles so far.

"It's a combination of good pitching and we're not hitting right now," Guillen said. "Right now our bats are very silent."

The White Sox are batting .243 in the series, 20 points below their season average.

Alex Rios had two hits with an RBI Sunday after batting .139 (5 for 36) in the previous nine games.

Rios is the only White Sox player that has faced Brian Matusz (4-11, 5.26), who will take the mound for Baltimore and is coming off his best start in a month. Rios is 1 for 2 against the left-hander.

Matusz gave up one run in six innings of a 9-7 win over Los Angeles on Wednesday. He was 0-2 with a 12.46 ERA in his previous four starts, which lasted a combined 13 innings.

Chicago second baseman Gordon Beckham left Sunday with a strained groin, and Guillen intends to rest him for this contest. Beckham has batted .390 over his last 24 games, and is hitting .251 after struggling for much of the first half of the season.

Florida Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez is concerned about his team's lack of offense. He hasn't had to worry about starter Josh Johnson.

Making his first start since a dominant performance in the All-Star game, Johnson looks for another solid outing Saturday when the Marlins try to prevent the Washington Nationals from winning their first series on the road in more than two months.

Near the bottom of the NL East with the July 31 trade deadline approaching, Florida (42-47) doesn't have much time to improve before likely opting to make some roster changes.

A 4-0 loss to Washington (40-50) on Friday was not a step in the right direction. The Marlins had four hits en route to their fourth shutout loss of the season. They are batting .228 this month while scoring fewer than four runs in seven of 11 games.

Reigning NL batting champion Hanley Ramirez has one RBI in his last 10 games, while power-hitting second baseman Dan Uggla has no homers and three RBIs in his last eight.

"We have the talent to have a way better record," Rodriguez said prior to Friday's loss.

The Marlins might not need much offense the way Johnson (9-3, 1.70 ERA) has performed. The right-hander, who owns the best ERA in the majors and ranks among the NL leaders with 123 strikeouts, has allowed one run or none in 10 of his last 11 starts.

Making his All-Star debut Tuesday, Johnson struck out two and retired all six batters he faced in the NL's 3-1 victory.

He just missed his first career shutout in his last regular-season outing, throwing eight innings of six-hit ball in a 4-0 win at the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 7.

"It's one of those things that I put on myself -- to go out there every time and give my team a chance to win no matter who I'm pitching against or what team I'm facing," said Johnson, the June NL pitcher of the month.

Johnson is 1-0 with a 3.75 ERA in two starts against the Nationals this season and 6-0 lifetime. He will try to prevent Washington, which is 15-29 on the road, from winning its first series outside the nation's capital since taking two of three May 10-12 at the New York Mets.

The Nationals will give the ball to Livan Hernandez (6-5, 3.37), who is looking to bounce back from one of his roughest outings of the season. He lasted five innings in Sunday's 6-2 loss to San Francisco, giving up five runs.

"I don't feel too good," said Hernandez, the 1997 World Series MVP for the Marlins. "My body don't respond perfect. It's no excuse. ... I tried to keep the ball down and it didn't happen."

In a 3-2 victory over the Marlins on May 9, Hernandez surrendered one run over seven innings and did not earn a decision. He is 13-8 with a 3.52 ERA in 29 starts versus his original major-league club.

Nationals first baseman Adam Dunn went 2 for 3 on Friday and is batting .457 with five homers and 12 RBIs in his last nine games. He is 4 for 21 with a homer lifetime against Johnson.

Despite Friday's loss, Florida has won 26 of its last 35 home matchups with Washington.

Ending a nine-game slide to the Colorado Rockies has the NL Central-leading Cincinnati Reds feeling good. Getting Edinson Volquez back earlier than expected from elbow surgery should further raise their spirits.

Volquez is scheduled to take the mound for the first time in more than a year when the Reds host the Rockies in the middle game of this series Saturday night.

Cincinnati (50-41) returned from the All-Star break Friday, beating Colorado 3-2 to snap a four-game overall losing streak and a nine-game slide to the Rockies (49-40).

"It kind of gets you off on the right foot for the second half," starter Bronson Arroyo said after earning his 10th win.

The Reds lead the Central by one-half game over St. Louis, and Volquez's return could help them create some breathing room.

The right-hander will make his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery last August. He hasn't appeared for the Reds since getting hurt in a win at St. Louis on June 1, 2009, ending his season with a 4-2 record and 4.35 ERA in nine starts. The previous year, he led Cincinnati with a career-high 17 wins and made the All-Star team.

"Probably going to be like the first time ever," said Volquez, who went 4-0 with a 1.45 ERA in six minor-league rehab starts. "I feel like I haven't pitched in two years. I don't know how I'm going to feel."

Volquez, who hadn't been expected to return until August, was also suspended 50 games earlier this season after testing positive for a banned fertility substance.

His presence will be welcome in a Cincinnati rotation missing Aaron Harang (sore back) and Homer Bailey (inflamed pitching shoulder). However, manager Dusty Baker is tempering expectations for Volquez.

"This is the beginning of the season for him," Baker said. "You've got to be a little more tolerant. It's not like this guy's unproven. It's like a lot of guys who have had Tommy John (surgery) and come back. He'll probably be better next year than he will be this year."

Volquez is 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA in two starts against Colorado.

The Rockies, who opened a season-high 11-game road trip Friday, have dropped consecutive games following a six-game winning streak that put them in the thick of the NL West race.

Jorge De La Rosa (3-1, 4.94) will make his second start since returning from a torn tendon in his left middle finger.

The left-hander, who led Colorado with a career-high 16 wins last year, was tagged for seven runs -- five earned -- with six strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings of a 10-8 win over San Diego on July 9, hours after being activated from the disabled list.

De La Rosa is 1-2 with an 8.36 ERA in eight career games -- two starts -- against the Reds.

Colorado's Brad Hawpe is expected to move from right field and make his first career start at first base in place of Todd Helton, who is out indefinitely with back stiffness. Hawpe played the position sparingly in spring training.

"Hopefully, when Todd is healthy, he's back in our lineup, because he's big in our lineup," Hawpe told the Rockies' official website. "I don't read anything going into something. I'm not going to predict what's going to happen. I've found out for me it doesn't work, and it drives me crazy."

Hawpe is 1 for 6 off Volquez, but the hit was a homer.

Tim Hudson and the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves have been nearly unbeatable at Turner Field, but they've been vulnerable there recently.

Hudson looks to help the Braves begin re-establishing their home dominance Saturday night when they face the Milwaukee Brewers.

Atlanta (53-37) leads the division by five games over the Mets, partly due to owning the best home record in baseball at 31-11. However, the Braves are 5-4 in the last nine at Turner Field, batting .234 with three homers and averaging 3.3 runs in that span.

They lost at home again Friday, falling 9-3 to Milwaukee after opening this four-game set with a 2-1 victory a day earlier.

"We didn't do anything," third baseman Chipper Jones told the team's official website. "We didn't pitch, play defense or hit at all. It's a good formula to get taken out behind the woodshed."

Hudson (9-4, 2.30 ERA) is 5-2 with a 1.85 ERA in seven home starts, but lost his most recent outing there July 4. The right-hander allowed three runs in eight innings of a 3-2 defeat to Florida.

The three-time All-Star responded with a stellar effort on the road six days later, limiting the Mets to four hits in seven innings of a 4-0 win.

Hudson hasn't won consecutive games since a personal three-game winning streak May 11-21. That stretch started with an 11-3 victory over Milwaukee, during which Hudson overcame a career high-tying six walks to yield one run in six innings.

He's 3-2 with a 2.98 ERA in seven starts against the Brewers.

The Braves might be without Jones after he sustained a mild left hamstring strain Friday when he hit a popup with the bases loaded in the seventh inning. He went 0 for 3 in the loss, but is hitting .476 with four homers and eight RBIs in his last seven games against the Brewers.

Jones said there's a 50 percent chance of him playing Saturday.

"It's nothing major," he said. "It's just a precautionary measure right now."

Milwaukee's offense has come alive lately, batting .300 with nine homers and 25 runs during a 4-1 stretch.

Ryan Braun is a major reason for that success. He's hitting .381 with three homers and five RBIs after connecting for a two-run shot Friday.

The All-Star left fielder does most of his damage on the road with a .346 average, eight homers and 37 of his 56 RBIs. That production could continue Saturday since he's 5 for 11 against Hudson.

The Brewers will turn to Chris Narveson (7-6, 6.02), who has lost consecutive starts with a 14.04 ERA after winning three of his previous four with a 3.70 ERA.

The left-hander turned in perhaps the worst performance of his career July 7, getting tagged for 10 runs while serving up three homers and committing a throwing error in 3 1/3 innings of a 15-2 home loss to San Francisco.

A start on the road may not be ideal for Narveson, who is 0-3 with a 7.71 ERA in his past four away games.

Solid defense helped the Chicago White Sox during their lengthy winning streak. Poor fielding played a major role in ending that run.

The AL Central-leading White Sox try to bounce back from their first loss in nearly two weeks Saturday when Mark Buehrle makes his first start at Target Field against the Minnesota Twins.

After committing no errors in eight of its previous 10 games, Chicago (50-39) had four errors in Friday's 7-4 loss to Minnesota. Dayan Viciedo and Gordon Beckham each had miscues in the fourth inning as the Twins scored three unearned runs off Gavin Floyd and snapped the White Sox's nine-game winning streak..

"We make a couple of mistakes, and at the end of the day we pay," manager Ozzie Guillen said.

The White Sox, who have won 26 of 32, will look to rebound behind Buehrle (8-7, 4.24 ERA). The veteran left-hander had no success at the Metrodome over the last two seasons, going 0-4 with a 7.16 ERA in five starts.

Buehrle, who is 5-1 with a 2.23 ERA in his last six outings, is pitching on seven days' rest due to the All-Star break. He threw seven shutout innings in an 8-2 victory over Kansas City on July 9.

"It was vintage Buehrle," Royals outfielder Scott Podsednik told the White Sox's official website. "... We got a couple of hits here and there but we just couldn't get anything going against him. He was sharp."

Buehrle wasn't sharp in a 5-4 win over the visiting Twins on April 11, but he earned the victory after giving up four runs and eight hits in eight innings. Buehrle is 24-16 with a 4.04 ERA in 42 career starts against Minnesota.

While the White Sox are trying to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time since late June, the Twins (47-43) are looking for two straight wins for the first time this month.

"We need to get on the right track. We've been floundering here for about a month," said manager Ron Gardenhire after the team snapped a three-game home losing streak. "The crowds are coming out to support this baseball team, and we need to play a better brand of baseball for 'em. Tonight, hopefully that's a good start."

Carl Pavano (10-6, 3.58) has been giving the club plenty of solid starts. Prior to Friday's victory, the Twins' previous two wins were starts by the veteran right-hander.

"Carl has been our stopper so far this year," Michael Cuddyer told the Twins' official website after Pavano surrendered three runs over 7 2/3 innings of Sunday's 6-3 victory at Detroit. "He went out there and did it again today."

Pavano, 5-0 with a 2.87 ERA in his last seven starts, earned the victory in a 3-2 win over the visiting White Sox on May 12 when he gave up two runs in seven innings of six-hit ball. Pavano is 4-2 with a 2.81 ERA in six starts against Chicago.

White Sox right fielder Carlos Quentin is questionable Saturday after missing Friday's game with a bruised right wrist. Quentin, who is batting .474 with six homers and 13 RBIs in his last six games, is 0 for 6 lifetime against Pavano.

Strong pitching has helped the Oakland Athletics get back on track, and they have every reason to expect another strong performance with Trevor Cahill set to take the mound.

Cahill looks to match his win total from last season as the Athletics seek their fourth straight victory in a matchup with the struggling Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.

Oakland (44-46) opened this three-games series with a 5-1 victory Friday night, getting an outstanding start from Gio Gonzalez.

The A's have given up three earned runs in winning their last three games. They lost their previous four, surrendering 18 runs in the final three contests.

"For the second half, we should be better and healthier," manager Bob Geren told the A's official website. "We'll be right in there fighting every step of the way."

Oakland, which has won eight of 10 on the road, will now send Cahill (9-3, 2.94 ERA) to face Kansas City (39-50). After winning 10 games as a rookie last year, Cahill's strong first half of this season earned him a spot on the American League All-Star team.

Cahill, though, couldn't play in that game Tuesday night because of a new rule that keeps pitchers from participating if they start Sunday. In that outing, the 22-year-old right-hander gave up an unearned run in seven innings to earn a win in Oakland's 5-2 victory over the Angels.

"I wanted to end the first half on a positive note, especially going to the All-Star game," Cahill said.

Cahill has surrendered two runs or fewer in four of his last five starts. He has won both of his career starts against the Royals, posting a 4.09 ERA.

Though Cahill has needed little run support, he certainly wouldn't mind another productive game at the plate from his offense. The A's have scored 30 runs over their last four games after being held to two or fewer in each of their previous three contests.

Designated hitter Jack Cust has two homers and five RBIs over his last four games. He has seven RBIs in his last eight games at Kansas City.

Oakland now faces Kansas City starter Bruce Chen (5-3, 3.81), who is coming off his shortest start of the season, surrendering three runs and six hits in 3 1/3 innings of an 8-2 loss to the White Sox on July 9. He went 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA over his previous four starts.

The veteran left-hander is 1-2 with a 3.28 ERA in four starts versus Oakland, but this will be his first against the A's since Aug. 26, 2005.

The Royals desperately need a strong outing from Chen with a 7.91 ERA during a four-game losing streak.

Kansas City's lineup hasn't been much help during that stretch, scoring two runs or fewer three times.

Royals cleanup hitter Billy Butler is 3 for 15 (.200) over his last four games. He went 1 for 4 Friday after hitting .441 with 11 RBIs in his previous nine home games versus Oakland.

Cliff Lee pitched like a workhorse in his first start for the Texas Rangers.

Now, he'll try again to break into the win column with his new team.

Texas' prized trade acquisition seeks to pitch the Rangers to a third consecutive victory over the slumping Boston Red Sox on Saturday night at Fenway Park.

Obtained July 9 in a six-player deal with Seattle, Lee (8-4, 2.64 ERA) made his Rangers debut last Saturday in a 6-1 home loss to Baltimore. The 2008 AL Cy Young winner yielded six runs and a season-high three homers.

"It is what it is," Lee said. "The first one is out of the way and hopefully I can do better from here on out."

However, the performance wasn't all bad for the left-hander, who went the distance for his AL-best sixth complete game and fourth in his last five starts.

"Cliff showed exactly what he's capable of doing," Rangers third baseman Michael Young said. "He had to be tired from all the travel and all that's been going on for the last couple of days, but he showed exactly what he's capable of giving us. ... We're all excited about what we have."

Lee should be rested enough to go nine again despite pitching an inning in Tuesday's All-Star Game. He needed only six pitches to retire all three NL batters he faced.

He will be opposed by Boston's biggest pitching acquisition of 2010 in John Lackey (9-5, 4.78), who hasn't lived up to expectations since signing a contract worth $82.5 million over five years.

Lackey allowed seven runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings of last Saturday's 9-5 loss at Toronto. He walked six, a season high.

"That's kind of the way things have been going for me," he said.

Lackey will now try to avoid losing three consecutive starts for the first time since Aug. 4-14, 2006, a slump that included a defeat to Texas while with the Los Angeles Angels.

He'd probably prefer to face a different team. Lackey is 11-12 with a 5.87 ERA against Texas -- the ERA is his highest against any AL opponent. In his last 10 starts versus the Rangers, he's compiled a 7.74 ERA and a .356 opponent batting average.

Young is 31 for 83 (.373) off the former AL West rival right-hander -- both his most hits off any pitcher and the most hits allowed by Lackey to any batter.

The AL West-leading Rangers (52-38) appear primed to give Lackey fits again, as they've had no problems hitting the Boston staff hard while winning the first two games of this series. Texas has racked up 15 runs and 24 hits in the victories. Lackey's former batterymate Bengie Molina hit for the cycle in Friday's 8-4 win, including a fifth-inning grand slam to break open a close game.

The slow-footed catcher completed the cycle in the eighth by legging out the sixth triple of his 13-year career.

"For a guy who has been criticized for his speed for 11 1/2 years and may be the slowest guy in the world, it was an unbelievable feeling," Molina said.

However, Molina left the game a few pitches later due to tightness in his right quadriceps. His status for Saturday is uncertain.

The Red Sox (51-39) have dropped seven of nine to fall 6 1/2 games behind the first-place Yankees in the AL East and 3 1/2 behind Tampa Bay for the wild card.
