Overall record at finals:

Best performance:
Quarter-finals in 1990.

Most apearances at finals: Roger Milla (1982), (1990), (1994) - 10.

Most goals at finals: Roger Milla (1990, 1994) - 5.

World Cup high:
Reaching the quarter-finals in 1990. Cameroon began the finals with a memorable 1-0 win over reigning champions Argentina, courtesy of a François Omam-Biyik goal, winning the group ahead of Romania and USSR. Two extra-time goals from Roger Milla saw them move past Colombia in the second round before the 'Indomitable Lions' suffered extra-time heartbreak of their own as they went down 3-2 to England despite another impressive showing.

World Cup low: Getting thrashed 6-1 at the hands of Russia at the 1994 finals. Oleg Salenko scored a record five goals in the match to condemn Cameroon to bottom spot in the group, with a 2-2 draw with Sweden all they had to show for their appearance at the finals.

World Cup legend: Roger Milla. Rigobert Song may be set to overtake his Cameroon finals appearance record, but Milla is a player who epitomised the spirit of World Cup football, representing the 'Indomitable Lions' at three finals. Incredibly, he was Cameroon's top scorer at the 1990 finals without starting a single game. As a super-sub, Milla netted two crucial braces in 2-1 wins against Romania and Colombia in the second round. He is both the oldest player to have played and to have scored at the World Cup, a record achieved at 42 years and 39 days when he made his final international appearance against Russia in the 1994 World Cup.

The story so far: Cameroon competed in their first World Cup finals in 1982, becoming the fourth African country to do so after Morocco, Zaire and Tunisia. In their first ever finals match, they earned an impressive 1-1 draw with eventual champions Italy. They finished the group stage unbeaten after draws with Poland and Peru but were eliminated on goals scored behind the Italians.

In 1990, they stole headlines around the globe with perhaps the most memorable display by an African team at the World Cup. After shocking the world by beating reigning champions Argentina 1-0, Cameroon also picked up a win over Romania before losing to USSR, and they became the first African side to win their group at a finals. Colombia were beaten in the second round before Cameroon threw away a 2-1 lead over England, losing 3-2 after almost causing another major shock.

The 1994 tournament was one to forget as Cameroon crashed out after losing 3-0 to Brazil and 6-1 to Russia, ending up bottom of their group. The only highlight was Roger Milla's record-breaking appearance and goal against the Russians. In 1998, the 'Indomitable Lions' finished bottom of their group again with a 3-0 defeat to Italy sandwiched in between draws with Austria and Chile. And in 2002, after qualifying for a fourth straight finals, Cameroon narrowly missed out on a place in the second round, drawing with Ireland and beating Saudi Arabia before losing 2-0 to eventual finalists Germany in a game they needed to draw to progress.

After disappointingly missing out on the 2006 finals, Samuel Eto'o and co now have a chance to move out of the shadow of the 1990 side and write a new chapter in Cameroon's World Cup history.

Qualification: Cameroon looked as though they would ease their way to South Africa after cruising through their opening African qualification group. Samuel Eto'o scored six goals in six games as boss Otto Pfister recorded five wins and just one draw - away to Tanzania - on their way to the third qualifying round.

But they failed to maintain their form and it appeared their World Cup dream was over after a 1-0 away defeat to Togo and a home draw with Morocco in their opening two games, which saw Pfister sacked and former Lyon boss Paul Le Guen appointed. Cameroon experienced a revival in fortunes with Le Guen at the helm as, helped greatly by the scoring exploits of Samuel Eto'o, they recorded four successive victories, including the 2-0 away win away to Morocco that secured their qualification at the expense of second-placed Gabon and booked their place at the finals for the sixth time, breaking the African record.

Qualifying record (second round): P6, W5, D1, L0, F 14, A2, Pts16.

Qualifying record (third round): P6, W4, D1, L1, F9, A2, Pts13.

Most appearances: Rigobert Song, Jean Makoun, Idriss Kameni (12).

Top goalscorer: Samuel Eto'o (9).

CAMEROON TEAM PROFILE:
Though their light may have faded somewhat since they brightened up the world stage at the 1990 FIFA World Cup™, Cameroon are not a side to underestimate at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The top African nation in FIFA’s rankings, they also bring Africa’s richest pedigree to the finals. They have appeared a continental-best five times in the World Cup, and no other African side has yet eclipsed their historic run to the Italy 1990 quarter-finals – though Senegal equalled the achievement in 2002.

However, the team have not managed to advance past the group stage in three finals appearances since then, winning just once in their nine matches. They lost out on Germany 2006 entirely after missing a penalty kick in the final moments of their last qualifier against Egypt. But the long road to the 2010 World Cup has forged considerable momentum behind what many Cameroonians are hoping is the right mix of players, and a new generation of Roger Millas and Francois Omam-Biyiks.

The road to South Africa
Though the 2-0 victory in Morocco that clinched their qualification was straightforward enough, Cameroon had in fact completed an impressive turnaround in a campaign that started with just a draw from their first two matches. Two victories in four days over contenders Gabon were followed by a comprehensive 3-0 defeat of Togo, and Cameroon’s four consecutive wins were more than enough to reach South Africa. In the end, the team, led from the back by the likes of veterans Geremi Njitap, Rigobert Song and goalkeeper Idriss Carlos Kameni, gave up just two goals in six final round contests.

The star players

Eto'o scored a total of nine goals in 11 qualifiers, and the world class striker will be the first player opposing coaches try to stop. The promising Pierre Webó is the other main threat up front, while Jean Makoun, Stephane Mbia and Alexandre Song give the midfield a classy but rugged edge in front of mainstays Song, Geremi and Kameni.

The coach
The reversal of fortune for Cameroon coincided with the arrival of no-nonsense 45-year-old coach, Frenchman Paul Le Guen, who took over from German veteran Otto Pfister after the slow start. Le Guen had previously taken charge of big clubs Lyon, Rangers and Paris St. Germain, and he brought a sea change in attitude and professionalism to the side. His controversial decision to hand the captaincy to three-time African player of the year Samuel Eto'o in place of long-time captain Rigobert Song turned out to be just what the two players and the team needed.

Record
• Cameroon were eliminated at the group stage of Spain 1982 despite not suffering a defeat. They lost out to Italy for second in the table on the goals scored ti-ebreaker after three draws.

• Cameroon have played in 17 FIFA World Cup matches, the most of any national team from Africa. Their 1-0 defeat of holders Argentina to kick off the 1990 FIFA World Cup is one of the great upsets in the history of the event.

• Roger Milla was a record 42 years and 39 days old when he scored for the Lions against Russia in the 1994 World Cup. He was also the first African to play in three World Cup finals.

What they said
“We have again made people believe in this team. It’s a great achievement for all of us to be able to play in a World Cup, especially one in Africa. We are dangerous because we have a good mix of experience, and we have learned to play together,” Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o.

FIFA member since: 1923

All-time leading scorer: Pele (77 goals)
Notable achievements: Copa America Champions (1919, 1922, 1949, 1989, 1997, 1999, 2004, 2007)
Legendary Player: The greatest player ever to play the game, Pele is one of the most recognizable and revered athletes of the 20th century. Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pele led Brazil to its first World Cup in 1958 at the tender age of 17, and scored 77 goals in 92 games during his international career. He won three World Cups during his sparkling career.

Brazil Team Profile:

It almost goes without saying that Brazil, the five-times world champions, go into every FIFA World Cup™ heavily favoured to add yet another star to the legendary Amarelinha shirt. Having played for A Seleção at three editions of the global showpiece, coach Dunga will be fully aware that any outcome other than a sixth world crown will likely be considered a failure.

The road to South Africa
The fans' at times vitriolic reaction to Brazil's results and performances particularly early on in the qualifying phase illustrates just how demanding they can be. Despite ending the preliminary event on top of the standings, after recording nine wins, seven draws and two defeats, and having clinched a South Africa 2010 berth with three matchdays to spare, the Auriverde camp had been subjected to a torrent of abuse after successive goalless home draws against Argentina, Bolivia and Colombia. Dunga's charges really hit their stride from April 2009, however, racking up five wins in a row including two landmark away results: a 4-0 humbling of Uruguay in Montevideo and a 3-1 defeat of arch-rivals Argentina in Rosario. It was the latter which confirmed their passage to South Africa.

The star players
Picking just a few names from a country so prolific at producing footballing talent is no easy task, though 2009 did underline the importance of certain key players. Starting between the sticks and we have keeper Julio Cesar, whose safe hands are a vital feature of A Seleção's miserly defence. The triumphant FIFA Confederations Cup South Africa 2009 campaign cemented Kaka's place as the man Brazil look to for inspiration, a fact reflected in him taking the adidas Golden ball. Meanwhile up front, Luis Fabiano proved himself a truly world-class finisher with five goals including a priceless brace in the 3-2 final win over the USA.

The coach
Upon taking the job in August 2006, Carlos Caetano Bledorn Verri, better known as Dunga, had already experienced the full gambit of emotions that come with playing for Brazil. Indeed, having been among the scapegoats targeted after the disappointment at Italy 1990, the powerful midfielder skippered Brazil to victory four years later in the USA. Despite the Brazilian national team position being his first coaching role, Dunga answered those who doubted his credentials by guiding A Canarinha to triumph in the 2007 Copa America, the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 and qualifying the team for South Africa 2010 with room to spare.

Records
- Brazil are preparing to contest their 19th consecutive FIFA World Cup finals. They are the only country to have taken part in every edition of the global showpiece.
- They are also the only country to have won the title five times: amassing a total of 64 victories, 14 draws and 14 defeats in 92 games played.
- Between 15 June 2008 and 11 October 2009, A Seleção went 19 games unbeaten.

What they said
"We have to learn to live with the favourites' tag. We mustn't let it turn into something negative, as it has done in previous years." Kaka, following the win over Argentina which clinched qualification.

Most goals at finals. Ronaldo (1998, 2002, 2006) - 15.

World Cup high:
Becoming the first country to win three World Cups with what has been described as the world's greatest ever team in 1970. They defeated Italy 4-1 in the final and were graced by an attacking line-up that boasted Pelé, Tostao, Gerson, Jairzinho and Rivelino. As close to attacking football perfection as has yet been seen.

World Cup low:
Losing the final of France 98, where star man Ronaldo played like a zombie after suffering a fit in the hours leading up to the match. Brazil had no answer to a Zinedine Zidane-inspired France and crashed to a 3-0 defeat.

World Cup legend: Pelé played in four World Cups and remains the only player to have won three World Cups. He was champion for the first time as a 17-year-old at Sweden 1958. Having missed much of the 1962 tournament after suffering an injury in Brazil's second game, and then being kicked out of the tournament after rough-house tactics from Hungary and Portugal as Brazil exited, he secured his legend at Mexico 70, where he inspired the tournament's best-ever team, scoring in the final and providing the assist for Carlos Alberto's wonderful goal to clinch the 4-1 win. Overall, he played 14 games and scored a total of 12 goals.

The story so far: The team and country most associated with the World Cup, Brazil's love affair with the greatest show on earth has been one of constant attendance. They are the only team to have played in all 19 tournaments and their non-participation is almost unthinkable. They first showed their potential in 1938 when losing in the semi-finals and unearthing a true star in Leônidas.

As hosts in 1950, a nation went into mourning when Uruguay beat them 2-1 in the deciding match, with the result that Brazil have not worn white-coloured shirts since. It was in Sweden in 1958 that they finally lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy after unearthing Pelé and Garrincha as they became the first team to win the World Cup in a different continent. Pelé's injury in 1962 left Garrincha as the star man and the winger, as well as Pelé's replacement, Amarildo, secured victory in Chile. The high point came in 1970 with the Jules Rimet Trophy claimed forever and the world dazzled by a team that won every game in unmatched style.

The rest of the 70s were not so glorious, although they claimed third place in 1978. Four years later, Brazil were again the entertainers but fell to Italian guile in a classic second-round encounter. Mexico 86 and Italia 90 were tales of unfulfilled promise and premature exits, but USA 94 saw Brazil, perhaps more cautious than before, able to win the World Cup trophy after beating Italy on penalties in the final in Pasadena. In 1998, they were favourites but disaster struck in Paris amid the infamous Ronaldo saga and they lost 3-0. Ronaldo achieved vindication in 2002, though, with two goals in the final to complete a remarkable comeback. Germany 2006 saw them again expected to cruise to glory but their malfunctioning superstars were dumped out by a resurgent France.

Qualification: Brazil won the South American qualifying tournament with ease, and could afford to lose and draw their last two matches with Bolivia and Venezuela respectively. Coach Dunga ignored those who criticised his style of play as Luis Fabiano starred in attack and Julio Cesar in goal.

During their campaign, they beat Argentina 3-1 away for the first time in 14 years, and they once again enter the finals tournament as a heavily-favoured team.

Qualifying record: P18, W9, D7, L2, F33, A11, Pts34.

Most appearances: Julio Cesar (18).

Top goalscorer: Luis Fabiano (9).

TEAM PROFILE OF AUSTRALIA:

After a 32-year absence from the world stage, Australia made a strong statement at the 2006 FIFA World Cup™, reaching the knockout stage where it took a last-minute goal from eventual champions Italy to eliminate Guus Hiddink's team. The squad, now under another Dutchman, Pim Verbeek, features many of the Germany 2006 personnel and is a battle-hardened and experienced group.

Unlike four years ago when Australia qualified through via the Oceania zone, and finally a dramatic play-off against Uruguay, the preparation for the Socceroos this time is very different following a lengthy campaign across the length and breadth of Asia.

Appearances at finals:
1974 - First round
2006 - Second round

Overall record at finals:
Played 7, Won 1, Drawn 2, Lost 4.

Best performance: Second round in 2006.

Most appearances at finals: Lucas Neill (2006), Craig Moore (2006), Vince Grella (2006), Mark Viduka (2006), Luke Wilkshire (2006), Jason Culina (2006), Tim Cahill (2006), John Aloisi (2006), Mark Bresciano (2006), Scott Chipperfield (2006) - 4.

Most goals at finals: Tim Cahill (2006) - 2.

World Cup high: The dramatic comeback as three goals in the final eight minutes saw Australia come from behind to secure a famous win over Japan in Kaiserslautern in 2006.

World Cup low: The exit from the 1974 World Cup with no goals and only one point from three games.

World Cup legend: Johnny Warren, member of the 1974 squad and FIFA Centennial Order of Merit holder, was famous as a tireless advocate for Australian football until his death in 2004.

The story so far: Australia's two World Cup finals appearances came 32 years apart but are connected by the location of the tournaments - West Germany in 1974 and Germany in 2006. Australia's first finals appearance ended mostly in disappointment as the team failed to register their first goal or win, leaving the class of 2006 to set all the records as they reached the second round.

The Socceroos' controversial exit at the hands of eventual champions Italy in 2006 was considered harsh, and who knows how far Guus Hiddink's magic could have taken them? Qualification is now a minimum expectation in Australia since the team switched to the Asian confederation.

Qualification: Australia's disastrous Asian Cup in 2007 was the warning shot required to approach their first qualification campaign in their new confederation with the right mindset.

The experienced Socceroos line-up achieved a level of consistency and solidity under the guidance of Dutch coach Pim Verbeek that saw them cruise to South Africa on the back of a stellar defensive record. Australia's European-based stars dominated most Asian opponents, but the question is now whether they can evolve their style to compete with better and more diverse nations at the finals.

Qualifying record (final group stage): P8, W6, D2, L0, F12, A1, Pts20.

Most appearances: Mark Schwarzer (8).

Top goalscorer: Tim Cahill (3).

MORE TO KNOW ABOUT AUSTRALIA ? continue Reading :)

The road to South AfricaThe Socceroos impressed in a 14-match Asian qualification campaign overcoming some of the continents best to finish top of Group 1 and be one of the first nations to reach South Africa 2010. Australia also finished top of the previous qualifying stage ahead of Qatar, China and Asian champions Iraq, despite losing matches to the latter two. The next and final stage proved a triumph for Pim Verbeek's tactical acumen as the Socceroos remained undefeated across eight matches, five points clear of Japan, with Bahrain, Qatar and Uzbekistan trailing well behind.

The star players
Undoubtedly Tim Cahill has become a talisman for the national team, with the attacking midfielder recording a remarkable goal return for the national team thanks to an uncanny positional sense and aerial ability. Galatasaray wide-man Harry Kewell provides a source of inspiration on the left, with Brett Emerton playing an equally important role on the opposite flank, while in the centre of the park, the under-rated duo of Vince Grella and Jason Culina are a well-oiled and invaluable engine room. The current side are renowned for their defensive capabilities with central defender Lucas Neill and goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer an essential cog as the Socceroos leaked just four goals, including a record run of seven matches without conceding, en route to South Africa.

The coach
After a lengthy apprenticeship under Guus Hiddink, Pim Verbeek stepped out of the shadows to take Korea Republic to the 2007 AFC Asian Cup before assuming the reins of Australia in December 2007 just prior to the commencement of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Verbeek has brought a pragmatic approach to the team, built on a thrifty rock-solid defence, but also with capabilities going forward on the flanks. Highly respected by the players, Verbeek has instilled a strong sense of team in what is a highly motivated and focussed unit.
Previous FIFA World Cups
Australia have appeared on the world stage just twice, but are now making up for lost time by claiming a second consecutive qualification. Following a breakthrough showing in 1974, where a team of amateur players were far from embarrassed despite a first-round exit, the sports-mad nation had to wait another 32 years for a return to the FIFA World Cup. The revisit to Germany proved a success with Australia finishing second in their group behind Brazil and ahead of Croatia and Japan. It took a penalty deep into injury-time for Italy to overcome the Socceroos in the Round of 16 and continue their run to the crown.

Records

    * Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer claimed a national record as the team maintained a cleansheet for seven consecutive FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
    * Goalscoring honours in qualifying were shared by Brett Emerton and Tim Cahill with four goals apiece.

What they said
"We have to go there and do it better than last time. I think you have to make targets in life and the players are going to do that also. We want to do better than last time, and we will do everything possible to do that," Australia coach Pim Verbeek.
