Just like in Curitiba the championship leader emerged as the fastest in Q2, beating his own team-mate Alain Menu and SUNRED’s Gabriele Tarquini by one and two tenths respectively.
Reigning world champion Yvan Muller qualified fourth ahead of Tiago Monteiro, with Kristian Poulsen sixth and best of the Yokohama Trophy.
Tom Coronel was the great disappointed as he failed to move forward to Q2, while Fredy Barth won pole position for Race 2.

Q1 – The red flag stopped the session after four minutes only, due to Michel Nykjær’s SEAT hitting the wall at the Villeneuve chicane.
As soon as the session resumed most of the drivers went for a quick lap with Tiago Monteiro posting the fastest for good with the time of 1:38.952.
Yokohama Trophy competitors Kristian Poulsen (1:39.293) and Mehdi Bennani (1:39.328) were second and third fastest respectively, followed by the Chevrolet trio of Yvan Muller, Alain Menu and Rob Huff.
In the dying moments of the session Tom Coronel was desperately trying to make the top-ten. He eventually improved to 1:39.680 that was not enough as he qualified 11th, only 0.042 seconds behind Fredy Barth in 10th.
The following drivers qualified for Q2: Monteiro, Poulsen, Bennani, Muller, Menu, Huff, Michelisz (brilliant on his first outing with the BMW 320TC), Tarquini, Engstler and Barth. The latter will start from pole position on the reverse grid for Sunday’s Race 2.
Javier Villa did not post any lap due to a turbo failure.

Q2 – Chevrolet drivers set the pace straight from the beginning, with Huff (1:38.458) and Muller (1:38.738) posting the provisional fastest laps.
Although Huff’s time eventually proved to be out of reach for the rest of the field, Muller’s was beaten by Menu (1:38.598) and Tarquini (1:38.723) who both managed to improve just before the chequered flag was waved.
Despite a spin, Poulsen won pole for the Yokohama Trophy posting a 1:39.398 that beat Michelisz’s 1:39.450 by 0.052 seconds only.

Bethany Hamilton hasn't just survived the loss of her arm. She's thrived without it

Bethany Hamilton has been a household name since the age of 13, when a 14-foot tiger shark amputated her left arm while she was surfing off her home island of Kauai. Now 21, Hamilton is balancing her career as a pro surfer with promoting the movie based on her autobiography. "Soul Surfer" hits theaters April 8; see the trailer here. Hamilton spoke to ESPN on the phone from Orlando to talk about watching Hollywood stars act out her life, how good the movie's surf scenes are, and why she didn't want the Bible to end up on the cutting room floor.

Why did you want to see your autobiography made into a movie?
I just hope it encourages people in the troubles that everyone goes through. Everyone has a hard time at one time or another. I just hope that it can help people.

How did actress AnnaSophia Robb do playing you in the movie?
I've seen the film several times, and AnnaSophia did an amazing job. I'm just so stoked with how well she did. It was funny, because me and my mom actually helped pick her. We had seen her in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Bridge to Terabithia," and we suggested her and she ended up getting the part, so that was really cool.

The movie has an Academy Award-winner, Helen Hunt, an American Idol, Carrie Underwood, and Dennis Quaid. What is it like to see famous people acting out the story of your life?
Having Dennis and Helen, they are both amazing. It was cool because Dennis had seen me on some show I did in New York once they were announcing that we were doing the film and he wanted the part, to be the dad, because he had almost lost his kids in a health [crisis].

It was interesting. I've never been a part of that. There are all these little details that come into play, so it was cool to watch and learn and give input. But at the same time, it was kind of stressful, because it's our life story and we want it to be told the best it can be told. We had a really good director, Sean McNamara, and he was really key in letting us be a part of giving input. I think it helped being able to make the surfing accurate.

Did you do the surfing in the movie?
Yeah, I did. All the one-armed stunts are me, so the second half of the film. Alana Blanchard [Hamilton's friend who was with her on the day of the attack] does her own stunt surfing.
We went to Tahiti and filmed some really good surf down there. The surfing -- it's probably one of the best surf Hollywood films ever made, in my opinion.

Your Christian faith is really important to you. There's been some discussion over "Holy Bible" being digitally edited out of a hospital scene between you and your dad. What was your reaction to that?
Like I said, I was just thankful that they allowed us to give input and feedback. So throughout the whole editing process, there were kind of different little things, a little battle back and forth [about] how should it be. And I understand certain points, but it was just important to get our faith out there. You watch any other movie -- like Muhammad Ali [in "Ali"], it doesn't hold back his religion. Just because I'm a Christian, it doesn't mean that everyone who watches it has to be. It shares my faith, but it's not overdone and I think everyone can enjoy the film.

How much time will you get to spend in the ocean with the movie promotion?
It's kind of crazy. I'm on this trip, and I leave in a little over a week. I go straight to Australia [for the Legendary Pacific Coast Pro] and I have to compete. It should be interesting. I'm not expecting to win it or anything, because I haven't surfed for a week now. I'm [living] two different lives -- pro surfing and this movie coming out. It's hard to be away from the ocean.

The nine-time All-Star was 0 for 4 in the series finale Sunday, but the Cardinals won 2-0 behind Jaime Garcia's four-hitter.

Pujols is in ideal position to shake his slump. The first baseman is a .374 lifetime hitter against Pittsburgh. His 134 RBIs versus the Pirates are his most against any opponent and his 45 homers are two fewer than his production against the Chicago Cubs.

He's batted a whopping .458 with six homers and 16 RBIs in his last 20 home meetings with the Pirates, and is 4 for 10 off their scheduled starter, Charlie Morton.

While Pujols tries to regain his stroke, Kyle Lohse is looking to regain the form that produced a career-high 15 wins in 2008 -- his first season with St. Louis. The right-hander has totaled 10 wins since while struggling with various injuries. He went 4-8 with a 6.55 ERA in 18 starts last year.

However, Lohse turned in a productive spring training, allowing five runs in 24 innings over five starts.

"He's already proven to us when he's healthy he's a quality pitcher," manager Tony La Russa told the Cardinals' official website. "He's healthy, and we have to keep him healthy, and he'll be fine. Then we have to do the rest of the stuff, play defense and score some runs."

Lohse is 5-1 with a 3.41 ERA in 10 games versus Pittsburgh.

The Pirates are off to a solid start after taking two of three at Chicago. They rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to earn a 5-4 victory Sunday.

Pittsburgh center fielder Andrew McCutchen missed the series finale due to a stiff neck stemming from a diving attempt at a fly ball Saturday. His status is unclear for Monday.

McCutchen has a .345 average with nine doubles and 13 runs over his last 16 meetings with the Cardinals, and is 8 for 19 in his last five games in St. Louis. He's 4 for 9 with two doubles off Lohse.

That sort of production might be essential with Morton on the mound. The right-hander went 2-12 with a 7.57 ERA in 17 starts last season.

"Any opportunity I get, I want to make the best of it," Morton said. "I honestly can say that I did everything I could last year, but what I was doing just didn't work. I think we've worked on some things and made some adjustments."

One of Morton's victories came against the Cardinals and Lohse on Sept. 22, when he allowed two runs and four hits in six innings while McCutchen went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored in Pittsburgh's 11-6 home win.

Lohse lasted just three innings and was tagged for six runs and seven hits.

The Pirates have dropped eight of their last nine games in St. Louis.

Most British Asian cricket fans thrive on their identity. But if I'm honest, I have struggled with mine. As England will find this summer when they meet both World Cup finalists, Sri Lanka and India, Asians in Britain are among cricket's most fervent supporters. Today, as passions brink on overspill in the restaurants and homes hosting World Cup get-togethers, I'll be thinking of all the old friends from school who branded me the ultimate "coconut". Raised in an Indian household, I am an unashamed England supporter.

Allegiance is central to sport - it gives a veneer of meaning to an otherwise trite pastime - but as I found, just what drives someone to support one team over another is no straightforward thing.

It was easier when I was younger. I supported England because they were the team I knew. Introduced to the game in time for the 1993 Ashes, there was no question of backing Australia, so England were my team. As each of the players and their conundrums became more familiar - Will Hick ever make another Test hundred? Has Fraser lost his "nip"? Should Stewart open? - the tie grew stronger. It was a whole six Test series before the ultimate question of allegiance was thrust upon me, and by then it was too late.

England v India in the summer of 1996? Of course I supported England, they were my boys. Childish rebellion drove me to scream my colours ever louder. Wedding receptions became my own, nonsensical underdog struggle as I raged against the family establishment that was instructing me to support India. I proudly passed the Tebbit Test, having no clue of the sentiment that underpinned it.

Familiarity and defiance may have once been the root of my support for England but at secondary school I learned just why it was so sacrilegious. Colonial history and the experience of Indian migrants in England gave an altogether weightier feeling to the question of allegiance. For my parents' generation, supporting India was about maintaining a connection to the old homeland. It was about sticking one in the eye of the coloniser. It was about expressing an identity that was mangled in the process of adapting to a new country.

My childish resistance quickly gave way to a more sombre assessment. Though I still supported England, I insisted that was the fault solely of coincidence. If the first series I watched had involved India, there would have been no question about following the family line. As it was, I glibly accepted my schoolmates' decree that I was brown on the outside and white on the inside. Visiting India as a young teenager I apologised for supporting the old enemy and swore earnestly that against anyone else, India was my team.

Fast-forward 15 years and the context has changed. Indian cricket can exert an influence even greater than the Anglo-Saxon colonisers could ever manage. The mammoth TV-viewing public offers advertisers a market they are prepared to spend vast swathes of cash reaching. The IPL is a chest-thumping celebration of a modern India that the world's best players are longing to play in, and the BCCI can dictate terms to the rest of the game. The on-field ascent to supremacy has followed, and MS Dhoni's side stand within one match of crowning the transition by claiming cricket's biggest global prize. Fair to say the new India offers little by way of romantic struggle.

For most British Indians, like my friend Shamik, the shadow of the past is still what matters. "Basically it's history," he said. "Even though financially the power rests with India now, the context of colonialism and family makes India the team I support." But for me it's different. I cheered when India floored the boorish Australian side in epic series through the 2000s, yet now find myself begging for someone to challenge the new top dogs.

So coming to the all-Asian final, I'm left with another tricky question of alliance. I'm proud the best two teams in the tournament are Asian and compelled by the backdrop of two subcontinental giants playing their final World Cup match. Cricket-wise there is little to pick between the two sides. My roots tie me to India but the draw of a small island-nation scrapping against the game's powerhouse is almost irresistible. With a day to go I can't quite decide, but come the toss a jolt in my gut will reveal the answer.

The defending champions didn't make it, the mercurial outsiders stumbled, the strong contender choked, the Ashes winners ran out of gas, and after six weeks of high drama, we have come to this: the first all-Asian World-Cup final. And they deserve to be there: five of the top six run-getters, two out of top five wicket-takers, the fielder with the most catches and the wicketkeeper with the most dismissals will all be on show. The two teams have rallied around two of the best modern-day captains: MS Dhoni and Kumar Sangakkara.

Sangakkara is a fiercely ambitious man. Arjuna Ranatunga was almost the freedom fighter, infusing self-respect and clearing the colonial hangover, Mahela Jayawardene was the astute captain who brought so much tactical nous and cricketing intelligence, and Sangakkara is trying to add ruthlessness. Ranatunga pushed the boys to become men, Jayawardene made the men self-aware, and Sangakkara is trying to turn them ruthless. The evolutionary journey has produced a World Cup triumph, a runners-up finish and now, a chance to win it for the second time.

Sangakkara's dream, however, has been hit a nightmarish blow with the injury to Angelo Mathews. Even Muttiah Muralitharan won't be 100% fit. Mathews' absence severely affects the balance of the team and adds huge pressure on an already brittle lower-middle order, where Chamara Silva and Thilan Samaraweera haven't exactly set the tournament alight. Silva, who dazzled in the 2007 edition, has proved combustible in this tournament. Samaraweera is there to manage a collapse, and he did that really well in the curtailed game against Australia. Neither has Mathews' talent to turn a 225 score into 275.

To state the obvious, Sri Lanka will now heavily depend on Tillakaratane Dilshan, the captain and Mahela Jayawardene if they are to put up or chase down a daunting target. They will now have to bat with the knowledge that the lower middle order might not withstand a top-order collapse. Dilshan, though, is in great form, Sangakkara has looked as gritty as ever and while Jayawardene is yet to really flow, he can be always be counted on to come good in pressure games. And Sri Lanka have a varied bowling attack to defend even relatively unsafe totals and the ability to restrict the opposition from piling up too much.

MS Dhoni is a quietly ambitious man. Sourav Ganguly was passionate, Rahul Dravid was process driven, Anil Kumble led from the front with his grit, while Dhoni has been an intuitive captain. He is level-headed, and shrewd enough to marry passion and process. He has soaked up the pressure of being India's captain, is smart enough to know the value of his own brand, and keeps his star-heavy team rolling smoothly with the aid of Gary Kirsten. India's previous two victories, against Australia and Pakistan, have ironed out many of the flaws seen earlier in the tournament. However, those two wins also raise the question of India being emotionally drained. Do they have fuel left in them to raise their game one final time?

The batsmen, who had perhaps tried too hard to compensate for the relatively weak bowling attack by trying to do too much in the end overs and collapsed in the batting Powerplay, seem more aware of identifying a viable target. Someone or other has taken charge during tricky chases. Yuvraj Singh showed tenacity in the chase against Australia, and Suresh Raina maturity in his shot selection against Pakistan.

The poor performance in the early part of the tournament seems to have freed up the bowlers. Expectations are lower and the pressure is off in some ways, allowing them to show better discipline and skill. Munaf Patel has greater control over his legcutters and Harbhajan Singh has slowed up the pace to give himself a better chance to take wickets.

In the last two years, Sri Lanka and India have won eight games apiece against each other. In the last year, the record stands 4-3 in Sri Lanka's favour. In their last five encounters in India, though, the record stands 3-1, with one no result, in the home side's favour. However, these two teams have played each other so often - tomorrow's final will be the 30th time since July 2008- that they should know everything there is to know about each other.

Watch out for...

Sachin Tendulkar has the records, the mountain of runs and memorable Man-of-the-Match performances but there are a few things that have eluded him: a Test innings like Brian Lara's 153, a Ponting-esque record in World Cup finals and, indeed, a winner's medal. He has openly talked about his thirst for that World Cup triumph and has played his part in India's journey to Mumbai by being their top scorer. Will he achieve his dream tomorrow?

Muttiah Muralitharan has written some great scripts for himself: a memorable last Test match where he took the last wicket to get to the magical 800, a fabulous performance almost on one leg in his last ODI at home and now, with one World Cup winner's medal in the bag, he has the chance to end with another. He will fancy his chances against the Indian middle-order; he is likely to go around the stumps and aim for lbws with his off breaks and edges with his doosras. Can he script yet another great farewell?

Virender Sehwag's knock against Pakistan, defying the nerves of a World Cup semi-final, was vital in ensuring India could soak up the middle-over wobbles and reach a competitive score. If there is one man who can put up a nerveless display again in the final, it's him. It will be interesting to see how he plays the Sri Lankan spinners. Will he continue to, as he has done during this tournament and perished a few times, try hitting the spinners almost solely through the off side?

Mahela Jayawardene hasn't scored much after that 100 against Canada but all along, and even ahead of the tournament, he has been talking about his itch to perform in the big games. He has the skills to tame the Indian attack and the elegance to do it in style. It was a hundred in the semi-final of the 2007 World Cup against New Zealand that proved a major turning point in his career. "That hundred gave me confidence that I can do it at this big stage," Jayawardene said. "Ever since that moment I have probably lifted my game quite a bit and turned into a big-match player." Will he turn up for Sri Lanka tomorrow?

Ashish Nehra has been ruled out of the final and the Indian camp hasn't made it clear whether R Ashwin or Sreesanth will play. This is what Dhoni said when asked a direct question: "That is a tricky one. If you see the Mumbai track there is a bit of pace and bounce for the seamers initially. Also if there is reverse swing going the third seamer can have an impact on the game. At the same time if the three seamers are bowling well I can easily manoeuvre the bowling. But with four spinners and two fast bowlers there is not much room to manoeuvre too much."

And just when you think that's a clear hint Sreesanth will play, Dhoni adds, "If one of the fast bowlers has an off day it gets difficult. Still, not to forget, in whatever opportunities Ashwin got so far he has done really well. We have confidence in him. But we have not yet thought our bowling combination yet."

Randiv has played 13 games against India, with 12 wickets at an economy rate of 4.57, while Herath has played just one game against India. Herath has been playing regularly in this tournament, though, while Randiv has been drafted in from the cold.

Pitch and conditions

The hot summer has transformed the nature of the pitch from the one on which Sri Lanka beat New Zealand. It's a dry surface and the curator Sudhir Naik was quoted in Times of India as saying that 260-270 will be an excellent score batting first.

There have been only ten day-night games at this venue and Sri Lanka achieved the highest successful chase, overhauling India's 225 in 1997. The highest score by a team batting second under lights is 250. The chasing team has won four out of ten games under lights though.

Walking in to the freshly rebuilt Wankhede Stadium the day before the World Cup final, the most arresting visuals are the huge hoardings featuring Indian cricketers in body paint and primal scream. There's MS Dhoni looking slightly out of character; there are Harbhajan Singh and Virat Kohli in an extension of their on-field persona; and there is Virender Sehwag looking brooding and intense.
The two best teams in the tournament, and by no coincidence led by the two finest captains, will contest the final. Nothing can be better for what has been an outstanding event. The World Cup has given new life to the 50-over game and it has been hosted with great passion in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and in India. Now it has a dream final.

India will start favourites because they seem the more rounded of the two sides. They have players for most occasions and have batting match-winners of extraordinary pedigree. More important, as the tournament draws to a close, they seem to have a better idea of the combination they must believe will bring the World Cup home.

Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar are the best opening pair of the tournament, though by sheer weight of runs Upul Tharanga and Tillakaratne Dilshan will contest that. After the 175 against Bangladesh, Sehwag has been playing cameos, a bit like a brilliant actor working two shifts and leaving quickly after having delivered his lines impeccably. But even if he only does that, he makes it much easier for the batsmen to follow; especially, he takes the load off Tendulkar, who, apart from a quixotic phase in the semi-final, is batting as well as he ever has. The one thing he doesn't have in his gallery, a winner's medal, is a step away and I will be very interested in seeing how he keeps ambition at arm's length in the final.

India have resolved what is becoming a key position in this World Cup: Suresh Raina has batted with much confidence against Australia and Pakistan. Truly he has won back his spot and it has been wonderful to see him field, an area India are rather thinly endowed in. And Dhoni's extraordinary handling of Yuvraj Singh means he has the option of playing an extra seamer as he did against Pakistan. By working on his bowling Yuvraj has given himself the time to rediscover his batting form, paradoxical as that might seem.

India will come to Mumbai with their confidence soaring after back-to-back wins against opponents against whom they have had their most bruising encounters. And I have no doubt that Dhoni will not allow a win against Pakistan to be rated higher than any other. It cannot be so. It was a semi-final, not a final.

Indeed, Dhoni's leadership has been outstanding. He has backed his hunches and taken calls that might have seemed bizarre at the time, but always he has stayed calm and in control. It is a wonderful quality for a leader to possess. Having taken India to a World Twenty20 title, to the No. 1 spot in Test cricket, he now has the opportunity of winning a World Cup.

Arrayed in front of him are Kumara Sangakkara's mild, humble men, who become mighty competitors on a cricket ground. They have the most wonderfully innovative bowlers, men with unique styles and actions and who come at you from different angles. The top four batsmen are in brilliant form, and like India they are led by a man with extraordinary poise and assurance. Unlike India, though, they haven't quite ticked all their boxes yet.

Dilshan, Tharanga and Sangakkara have batted with great assurance, but after them, Mahela Jayawardene, another big-match player, hasn't had enough time in the middle, and Nos. 5, 6 and 7 appear a bit fragile. I believe Angelo Mathews should be the highest of those numbers, but he seemed to be in some pain in the quarter-final. If he is handicapped, and cannot bowl, for example, the Sri Lankans will lose the one outstanding feature they possess: the balance to the side. Mathews must bowl, otherwise the bowlers will start r at home fetched another and led to a comfortable win in the World Cup semi-final. Injury or not, who'd bet against him bowing on one leg and walking off the field with a handsome smile?

Fans in the subcontinent can sometimes be accused of missing the bigger picture by obsessing with individuals and certainly no one man can win the World Cup by himself. But that Tendulkar and Murali lend this World Cup final a certain poignancy and romance is unquestionable. Neither deserves disappointment but that's the cruelty of sport: for one dream realised tomorrow, there will be one broken. Murali has already been part of a World Cup-winning team but, if India lose tomorrow, Tendulkar will never know the feeling.

Their craft and ways are different, but there are remarkable similarities between Tendulkar and Murali. Their careers have almost run concurrently and they have built records that are unlikely to be ever broken. Neither has allowed fame to corrupt them or divert them from their path. Both have made their nations proud not merely by their achievements on the field, but also with the dignity and grace they have conducted themselves off it. The controversies that Murali's action generated were not of his making; if anything, the way he has dealt with them has merely enhanced his reputation. And if Tendulkar can be accused of anything it is of being too reticent.

They have even had similar rivals. When they dazzled, Brian Lara and Shane Warne were more magical and compelling, but Tendulkar and Murali have endured because their devotion to the game was purer and they allowed nothing to distract them. And over the years they have become strong symbols of national identity in a way Lara and Warne could never have become.

And from their team-mates they have not merely earned respect but genuine affection. Murali has always been the soul of the Sri Lankan dressing room. Both Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara spoke endearingly about what a "nuisance" Murali is with his constant chattering about cricket. "He perhaps thinks he knows more about batting than Sachin," Jayawardene said. Murali, already a star, was the first team-mate to take him out for a meal when Jayawardene was a nobody, and he was neither the first nor the last one to receive his kindness. "Murali is always there for you," Jayawardene said.

There is another team in the match and what a farewell would it be for Muttiah Muralitharan, Sri Lanka's greatest cricketer.

Tendulkar has never been as effusive by nature but, from all accounts, young players are drawn to him. Unlike some of his predecessors whose presence was intimidating, Tendulkar has been a calming influence in the dressing room, leading not merely by example but by doing little things to put at ease younger players who might have otherwise been star-struck by him.

If there is anything lacking between them, it's the absence of the kind of rivalry forged between either Tendullkar and Warne, and Murali and Lara. Leave aside a grand series, or full innings or a spell, it's hard to remember a moment of magic involving them. And remarkably, even though India and Sri Lanka have played each other incessantly in the last few years, our ball-by-ball records show only 91 balls in ODIs and 366 balls in Tests between Tendulkar and Murali.

What began as a 48-tournament marathon covering 27 destinations since last December has been reduced to a 72-hole sprint finish for the line in Dubai, with Kaymer and McDowell the only players in the 60-strong field still living the dream of being crowned European Number One on Sunday.

Going into this week’s season-ending Dubai World Championship presented by DP World at Jumeirah Golf Estates, 25 year old Kaymer leads 31 year old McDowell by €290,910 at the head of The Race to Dubai Rankings. With a first prize of €910,348 on offer to the winner over the Greg Norman-designed Earth course, the permutation is simple – if either Kaymer or McDowell triumphs on Sunday, they will be crowned The Race to Dubai champion for 2010.

Kaymer, from Germany, captured the US PGA Championship, the KLM Open and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship as he reaped a rich autumn harvest which propelled him into the lead in The Race to Dubai to add to his win in Abu Dhabi earlier in the campaign.

Northern Ireland’s McDowell endured a fallow spell after claiming The Celtic Manor Wales Open and the US Open Championship in consecutive appearances in June, and for a long time it appeared that Kaymer would not be overhauled in his unrelenting surge towards The Race to Dubai title.

However, the thrill of claiming the winning point in The Ryder Cup reignited McDowell’s challenge and a victory in the Andalucia Valderrama Masters, allied to a series of outstanding performances recently, has made the seemingly impossible possible.

Now one question remains…..who will breast the tape first and succeed World Number One Lee Westwood, who secured the Dubai World Championship and scooped the lion’s share of the $7,5000,000 bonus pool 12 months ago?

Westwood, currently in third place in The Race to Dubai after an injury curtailed season, cannot catch Kaymer but will be relishing the opportunity to remind the leading pair what he can do when fully fit and fresh.

The same can be applied to the third Major Champion of 2010 in the field, Louis Oosthuizen, whose autumn campaign has been interrupted by injury. The South African, whose moment of glory came at St Andrews in July, is now back in action and ready to improve on his current ranking of tenth in The Race to Dubai.

With the leading 15 players sharing the bonus pool – the new Number One will receive €1,092,418 – there is plenty to play for in the season’s finale, and Kaymer, who had just recovered from injury to compete in Dubai last year, is looking forward to leading from the front this time.

He said: “It’s been a fantastic season for me. To win my first Major and to be part of the winning Ryder Cup Team is way above my expectations, to be honest. But obviously when you win a Major, you know that you can win any tournament in the world.

“I’ve played very well the last few months and going into this week, I feel confident about my game. Hopefully I can play well, and make sure that I win The Race to Dubai somehow.”

McDowell has squeezed a first, tied third and fifth place from his last four starts in a last-ditch endeavour to catch and overtake Kaymer and he commented: “I am very happy with my form and my energy levels going into Dubai.

“Of course I am within touching distance now and I’ve got to play well, simple as that” added McDowell, who knows that outright victory in the Dubai World Championship would relegate Kaymer to the runner-up position in The Race to Dubai.

“I can’t control Martin’s golf ball – only mine” continued McDowell. “I’m going to go and play my own game and see what happens. I have a few things to brush up on but, all in all, I’m feeling really good about my game. I’m playing well enough to win and that’s all I can ask.”

Westwood, who finished second behind Italian Francesco Molinari in the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai after an injury time-out, returns to the scene of his triumph following another short break in order to give his leg injury more time to heal.

Both Westwood and Molinari can still theoretically finish second in The Race to Dubai while England’s Ian Poulter, after a sequence of tied 13th, tied sixth and first in the UBS Hong Kong Open last weekend, is the form horse going into the final furlong of the Race.

Poulter has climbed to fifth place and is in line for a nice bonus cheque while there is no disguising the talent of the Italian teenager Matteo Manassero, whose joint runner-up finish in Hong Kong has lifted him to 29th place in The Race to Dubai Rankings with rookie season earnings of €846,705 to date.

The leading 60 players now knuckle down to business, each with the aim of capturing the Dubai World Championship, even if they are not in the privileged position of Kaymer and McDowell going for the big prize.

I agree with the captain. ASU is a very good 3-5 team. If our D had started the year better our record might be a win or two better. The D has improved as we moved into sun belt play and our offense has been steady. Looking forward to Tuesday night. Hope we pack the stadium, they play Back in Black, and ASU comes out with a victory moving to 4-2 in the conference. Mr. Optomistic says that with 5 weeks left in the season a lot can still happen in the sun belt. ASU just needs to concentrate on winning.

Also wanted to add that in the sun belt as in most conferences you had better worry about every week. Any given Saturday a team can lose. MTSU needs to worry not only about ASU and FIU but also a team that seems to heat up at the end of the year...FAU

sorry about that ,my memory doesn't go back four years or maybe I mentally block out that loss. This game will be all about ASU stopping Dasher. If that happens(I believe that it will) then ASU will win. ASU plays so much better at home. With Troy losing and the sun belt up for grabs, I'm sure MTSU will come to play. Should be good.

plplmarshal1...I was actually in Jonesboro 4 years ago when MTSU did beatdown ASU. It is possible. Yet, the last time MT was there, I was also there again, and it was a different story. We played HORRIBLE. I definitely think this will be a close game. And it's definitely a test for MT. The only other team besides ASU that I'm worried about is FIU.

ASU lost to Louisiana, who the Raiders beat handily. And let's not forget Western's 54-21 win over the Cajuns. Also lost to Indiana, who fell by 30 points to Illinois two weeks ago.

no one comes to Jonesboro and gives ASU a beatdown. It just don't happen whether you are Louisville(this year) or Ole Miss(few years back) and certainly not MTSU. MTSU has beat ASU at home a couple times and owns the overall series. Last time in Jonesboro I believe it was an ASU win 31-14. He didn't waste any time sparking the Tigers (1-0) to victory, throwing for 186 yards and three touchdowns and adding 171 rushing yards and two scores in a 52-26 win over Arkansas State on Saturday.

"I don't know if I have seen an individual performance better than Cam Newton's. He is the best player I have ever seen live," Arkansas State coach Steve Roberts. "He made a huge difference in the ball game tonight -- he is hard to bring down."

Second-year Auburn coach Gene Chizik was also pleased with his new quarterback, who leads an offense that ranked 16th nationally in 2009 but lost quarterback Chris Todd and top rusher Ben Tate.

"He did some nice things when maybe something wasn't there," Chizik said of Newton. "He turned some bad plays into good ones."

Auburn went 8-5 last year, including a win over Northwestern in the Outback Bowl, but the team is hoping to improve on a 3-5 record in conference play -- its second straight losing SEC campaign.

The Tigers, however, have won eight of nine meetings with Mississippi State, including four straight on the road.

Their most lopsided SEC win last year was a 49-24 victory over the Bulldogs on Sept. 12. Mississippi State had few answers for Auburn's running game, which totaled five touchdowns and 390 yards -- matching its most since totaling 405 yards on the ground against the Bulldogs on Oct. 18, 2003.

Coming off back-to-back losing seasons, Mississippi State (1-0) held Memphis to 41 rushing yards to open with a 49-7 win Saturday.

The Bulldogs' passing game keyed the victory, totaling 372 yards and five touchdowns. Although junior Chris Relf started at quarterback, freshman Tyler Russell played most of the game, going 13 of 16 for 256 yards and four touchdowns -- two each to sophomores Chad Bumphis and Brandon Heavens.

"There were a lot of guys that were getting their first action out there today, and they responded," Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen said. "It is great to get that under their belt and get them some confidence going into the SEC schedule.

"That is a whole different ballgame when you start conference play, especially with a solid opponent," Mullen added. "I am expecting a big time atmosphere here Thursday night."

Auburn hasn't played well on the road well the last two years, losing seven of eight since a bizarre 3-2 win at Mississippi State on Sept. 13, 2008. The Tigers hope their defense plays like it did in that game, when it held the Bulldogs to 116 total yards.

The unit wasn't as sharp Saturday, allowing Arkansas State to rack up 323 passing yards.

"We have to make better tackles, especially in the open field," linebacker Josh Bynes said. "(It) was the first game, and I am not going to say it was first-game jitters, but all I can say is we have some things we need to work on."

It's unclear if Auburn will have linebacker Craig Stevens back in the lineup after he was suspended for the opener for disciplinary reasons. Stevens ranked second on the team in tackles last year.

"We hold our guys to a certain standard of excellence, and that is on the field and that is off the field," said Chizik, who didn't elaborate on the punishment. "If they are not living up to that certain standard right now then I've got tough decisions that I have to make."

That much is evident by looking only at Temple’s win totals during the past four years under the watchful eye of head coach Al Golden.

In his first season, the Owls won only a game.

Competing as an independent, Temple lost its first eight games of the Golden regime in 2006 and just missed setting a school-low mark for futility by beating Bowling Green to snap a 20-game losing streak, one shy of a school-record for consecutive losses.

The next season, the Owls won four games. Then five. And last year, after winning nine regular season games, Temple earned its first postseason appearance in 30 years, losing to UCLA, 30-21, in the EagleBank Bowl in Washington, D.C.

Whether last week's result at The Oval was attributable to poor batting from England or outstanding bowling from Pakistan - and the truth invariably lies somewhere in between - it is a fact nonetheless that England's dominance in this series, taken somewhat for granted as they coasted to a 2-0 lead with a nine-wicket win in the second Test at Edgbaston, is nowhere near as absolute as it might have once appeared. In fact, as the series finale looms at an overcast (and therefore swing-friendly) Lord's, it might even be described as precarious.

Thanks to an ever-diminishing series of team totals, which have drifted downwards from a decent 354 in the first Test at Trent Bridge to an insubstantial 222 at The Oval, the focus has fallen on England's batsmen to a degree not seen since they crashed to 102 all out at Headingley in the penultimate Test against Australia last summer. Then, of course, they battled back from a series-squaring innings defeat to claim the Ashes one match later with a hefty victory at The Oval, and all was forgiven. The challenge now, in England's final Test before the squad to tour Down Under is finalised, is to re-harness those powers of bouncebackability.

"It certainly wasn't the worst game we've had since I took charge," said England's captain, Andrew Strauss. "We've had some poor performances in the past, but we lost the game and that was disappointing because we should have been better than that. There are lessons to be learnt from The Oval and there's a pretty strong determination within the group to prove that that was a one-off and that we're better than we showed [in that match]. That's a pretty good state of mind to have, because generally, when we've had that state of mind, we've done well."

England, to be fair, have long had a pretty healthy record in that regard. It wasn't until the penultimate year of Michael Vaughan's reign, against India in 2007, that he relinquished his record of following every Test defeat with a victory at the next attempt, and while Andrew Strauss hasn't quite attained those standards, he's nevertheless started pretty healthily with a draw and two victories following his three previous defeats as England captain.

However, given that England bowled Pakistan out for 80 and 72 in the first two Tests at Trent Bridge and Edgbaston, last week's defeat has to rate as the most unexpected yet of Strauss's captaincy career - even ahead of the infamous 51 all out in Sabina Park 18 months ago, for the speed of that second-innings capitulation was at least in keeping with the pervading mood of crisis that had gripped the England squad since the falling-out between Kevin Pietersen and Peter Moores. The Oval reversal, on the other hand, has awakened issues that had been allowed to pass unnoticed during a misleadingly comfortable run of six Test wins in a row - and need to be addressed rather urgently.

"We haven't batted brilliantly, but it's hard to score 500 on a pitch that's doing a lot," said Strauss. "There was less excuse at The Oval because that was a pretty good batting wicket, but when you as a side are scoring 200 on a pitch where the opposition are being bowled out for 80, you've done a reasonably good job. It would be wrong to bury our heads in the sand and say everything is fine, but I'm very satisfied with the batting group generally. The key is to make sure that if you do lose a wicket, the next guy that comes in establishes himself at the crease and doesn't allow the opposition to build some strong momentum."

For Strauss himself, there's an extra pressure looming in this match, partly as a result of Alastair Cook's success in quelling the calls for his head by reaching a personally invaluable century in that Oval defeat, and partly as a consequence of Strauss's own struggle for form this summer. As was the case against India in 2007, when he was dropped from the team following a prolonged slump, he's been dismissed by a left-arm seamer in five innings out of six - with Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz filling the roles of Zaheer Khan and RP Singh respectively. And while Kevin Pietersen has attracted attention for his run of 25 innings without a century, Strauss is also in need of a significant score - since making 161 against Australia on this ground in July 2009, he's gone 22 innings without reaching three figures.

"It's one of those things," said Strauss. "If you start looking for too many reasons for things, then you're not concentrating on what you need to do, which is to go out and play. I'm reasonably happy with how my batting is going, because I've made some useful contributions but not got to three figures. A lot of the pressure that comes on a batsman comes from outside the group, but Lord's is a wicket I generally play well on, and I'm confident things will go my way."

If ever there was a venue designed to quell the jitters of England's malfunctioning top-order, it is Lord's, where a place on the famous dressing-room honours board manages - for the batsmen at least - to be both a thrilling accolade and somewhat passé. Both Strauss and Pietersen have made four centuries at the ground, with Pietersen's 152 against South Africa in 2008 leading to his memorable declaration that he had "never felt so loved", and of the current top seven, only Eoin Morgan has yet to make his mark. Admittedly, he's only played at the ground on one occasion, against Bangladesh earlier this summer, but that was also Jonathan Trott's Lord's debut, and he marked the occasion with a career-best 226.

For Pakistan, however, the allure of playing at Lord's will be heightened by the memories and lessons learned during their defeat against Australia earlier in the summer. Although the eventual 150-run margin looks emphatic on paper, the reality was of another nip-and-tuck contest in which ball dominated bat until the latter stages of Australia's second innings, when the sun shone sufficiently to allow the last two wickets to add a vital 126 runs. Pakistan's captain, Salman Butt, who made 63 and 92 in the match, believes his team will be stronger for the experience.

"Now we know the slopes and from where the wind comes," he said. "Not more than the English team, but still I think if we can play to our potential, we can beat them and level the series, and that would be the most wonderful thing. To come from 2-0 down to level the series would help and boost their confidence for the rest of their futures, and in difficult times in the future they will have something very good to remember - even when they are older and telling young people what can happen."

The Storm suffered their most lopsided defeat of the season their last time out after playing mostly reserves, but Seattle is expected to rest its starters again when it faces the Washington Mystics on Sunday.

Seattle trailed West-leading Phoenix by 2 1/2 games when it came to Washington on Sept. 3. The Storm were on a season-high six-game winning streak, but suffered a 78-67 loss.

The defeat proved costly, as Seattle finished three games behind the Mercury, who went on to win the WNBA championship.

The first-place Fever try to match a season high with their fifth straight victory Sunday when they face the Connecticut Sun, who are in danger of missing the postseason for the second straight time.

The Fever dropped seven of their final 10 games in 2009, but still won the East by four games. Indiana had clinched the top seed by late August, but the club is in a fight to secure that spot this season.

Indiana (20-10), which came within a victory of its first WNBA title last year, is trying to hold off New York, Washington and Atlanta for the No. 1 seed.

History of OLYMPIC:

Origins of the Olympic Flame

Fire has always played an important and symbolic role in our history because of its divine origins and the sacred element associated with it. For these reasons, the Greeks maintained consistent fires in front of their principle temples in ancient Greece. This was also the case in the sanctuary of Olympia, where the Ancient Olympic Games took place. The flame was lit using an ancient method where the rays of the sun are reflected in a skaphia, the ancestor of the parabolic mirror used today for lighting the Olympic flame.

The modern Olympic flame is ignited in Olympia at the site where the temple of Hera used to stand, by an actress playing the part of the High Priestess using the same ancient method. It serves as a reminder of how fires were lit on the altars of Greek gods and goddesses to honour them. The purity of the flame is preserved by the method of lighting using the sun's rays.
The First Olympic Torch Relay

The Olympic flame's modern history began with the 1936 Games of the Olympiad in Berlin. Inspired by the lampadedromia torch races held in ancient Greece in Athens, the Organising Committee of the Games of the XI Olympiad suggested that a flame be lit in Olympia and that it be transported to Berlin in what would be the first ever Olympic torch relay. Over 3,000 torchbearers participated in the 1936 relay which saw the flame travel approximately 3,000 kilometres across 7 countries. Since then, an Olympic torch relay, where the Olympic flame is carried in specially designed torches unique to each edition of the Olympic Games, has become an instantly recognisable and powerful symbol of the Olympic Movement.

Kumar Sangakkara believes New Zealand are tough opponents because of their discipline, which he said was an attribute other teams should pick up from Ross Taylor's side. New Zealand lack the big names of the other two teams in the tournament but started off with a crushing victory over India, serving notice to anyone under-estimating them.

"The great thing about New Zealand is they are very competitive," Sangakkara said before the start of his team's practice session under lights. "They play very orthodox, very structured cricket. Strategies are set and they always try to execute those strategies. That's the discipline that I think we can all learn from New Zealand.

"It's very important in Twenty20 and one-day cricket now that you have applied executable strategies out in the middle that everyone understands and everyone can execute according to their own abilities. New Zealand does that probably the best in the world, so that makes them a very tough side."

The discipline and strategy are particularly important when batting second in the challenging conditions in Dambulla, where the team batting first has had a distinct advantage in recent matches. "It's not mostly skill, it's about being mentally attuned to what's happening there and being ready with not just one but two or three plans," he said.

The tournament is seen as a part of the team's fine-tuning ahead of the World Cup but the pitches in Dambulla aren't the traditional subcontinental flat tracks. "Playing in conditions like this is very good for us because when it is a challenge, you got to relish it," Sangakkara said. "The harder the things you have to do out in the middle, the improvement becomes faster. For us, that is how we are going to look at this tournament."

One aspect of Sri Lanka's cricket which will be closely watched is the spin bowling. With no Muttiah Muralitharan around, it's a chance for any of Suraj Randiv, Ajantha Mendis and Rangana Herath to establish themselves in the side. "It depends on the opposition we are playing," Sangakkara said when asked about the first-choice spinner. "Depending on that, we will pick one or the other [Randiv or Mendis]. We got Rangana Herath in the wings as well. So each time we will make sure that we play the right combination for the opposition unless there is a huge difference in form between the bowlers."

New Zealand had gone in without a spinner in the first match, but that could change in case Jacob Oram fails to recover from his hamstring problem. "We have a little bit of a niggle with Jacob Oram, just a tight hamstring, hopefully he can recover well tonight, we'll see how he goes tomorrow," the captain Ross Taylor said. "He's an outstanding bowler for us, top-10 in the one-day rankings, if we were to lose him, it will be a huge loss but it will be an opportunity for whoever comes in."

A win on Friday will virtually put New Zealand in the final, but Taylor was not looking that far ahead. "I don't want to get carried away, it was one victory and the team played well. Sri Lanka are a difficult opponent in their home conditions and we have to come out with the same attitude and the same intent in the next game, we know if we do that we give ourselves a good chance."

"We're feeling good about ourselves," said pitcher Jon Garland, the winner in Thursday's 3-0 victory over the Pirates. "We can't get a little overexcited. We just need to go up there and continue to play the baseball we've been playing and let it go the way it's going to go."

There are 10 meetings left between the teams, including six in San Francisco.

"It's definitely a big series," Giants pitcher Matt Cain said. "We have to play well."

The Giants are a different team than the one that struggled against San Diego in April and May. A big reason is the presence of veteran Pat Burrell and rookie Buster Posey, neither of whom was on the roster for the first eight games with San Diego.

Posey is batting .331 with eight homers and 41 RBIs since being recalled from the minors May 29. Burrell is hitting .299 with 10 home runs and 28 RBIs in 53 games for the Giants, who acquired him after being waived by Tampa Bay.

Burrell hit two homers, including a grand slam, in an 8-7 win over the Cubs on Thursday. He has homered three times in two games and is 11 for 25 with 10 RBIs in his last seven.

Though Sanchez (8-7, 3.55 ERA) is 0-2 in three starts against the Padres this season, he has a 2.57 ERA in those games. The Giants have been shut out in both losses.

To help make good on his prediction, the left-hander likely will need to improve upon his outing Sunday when he allowed four runs in four innings of a 6-3 loss at Atlanta.

"I think he'll have more pressure on himself now pitching against us, just because he predicted something that he can only handle for one game out of three," Padres closer Heath Bell said.

San Diego will start Clayton Richard (9-5, 3.83), who should feel confident facing the Giants after going 2-0 with a 1.77 ERA in three starts against them this season.

Though Richard is 2-0 in his last three outings overall, the left-hander looks to bounce back after he allowed five runs in 3 2/3 innings of 6-5 loss at Arizona on Saturday.

Ryan Ludwick will face the Giants for the first time in a Padres uniform. Though the former All-Star is 9 for 39 in 11 games with his new team, he homered three times and drove in five runs in the series with Pittsburgh.

He is a lifetime .311 hitter against San Francisco but is 7 for 33 at AT&T Park.

Abreu's move to the leadoff spot following the Orioles series has sparked the club. Known for his patience at the plate, he is hitting .375 with three doubles, two homers and six RBIs since the switch.

Abreu hit a walkoff homer in a 2-1, 10-inning victory over Kansas City on Wednesday as the Angels swept the three-game series.

While Abreu has been a catalyst atop the lineup, a rejuvenated Scott Kazmir (8-9, 6.57 ERA) is also looking to boost Los Angeles' playoff hopes.

The left-hander returned from his latest injury with a strong performance Saturday, allowing one unearned run and three hits in five innings of a 10-1 win at Detroit.

He posted a 13.73 ERA during a four-start losing streak before arm fatigue landed him on the disabled list July 10 -- his second trip to the DL this year.

"We're talking about a guy that, if he pitches to his potential, will be a Cy Young candidate," manager Mike Scioscia said. "This season hasn't gone as scripted, but he has never given up, and you saw that again (Saturday)."

Kazmir is 2-0 with a 4.94 ERA in four starts against the Blue Jays (60-54).

The Angels have won five of six season meetings with Toronto, taking two of three at home from May 24-26.

The Blue Jays are coming off a stirring 6-5 win over Boston on Thursday, as Fred Lewis capped a four-run ninth-inning rally with a walkoff sacrifice fly. That allowed Toronto to avoid a three-game sweep.

The Blue Jays won't have Brandon Morrow as they try to build on the victory, as he is being skipped in the rotation to give him extra rest after his last outing.

Morrow had career highs of 17 strikeouts and 137 pitches Sunday, when he came within one out of a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over Tampa Bay.

The Blue Jays will instead turn to Marc Rzepczynski (0-1, 7.15), who will be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Rzepczynski hasn't appeared for Toronto since struggling with his mechanics in a 5-2 loss at Kansas City on July 21. He allowed five runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The left-hander, 2-5 with a 4.27 ERA in 13 starts over two seasons, hasn't won since last facing the Angels on Aug. 21. He yielded one run and three hits with six strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings of a 5-4 home victory.

The Rockies look to beat the Brewers for the 12th time in 14 games at Coors Field in Friday night's series opener.

Colorado (59-55) finished a seven-game trip against NL-worst Pittsburgh and the slumping New York Mets with three wins. The Rockies return home six games back of wild card-leading San Francisco following Thursday's 4-0 loss to the Mets, the second time in three days they were shut out.

"The clock is on," Carlos Gonzalez told the Rockies' official website. "We know we have to do something about it, because we don't have very much time. But at the same time, we don't need to add any pressure, or it's going to be worse."

Returning home should help reduce some of the pressure.

Colorado has the league's third-best home record at 36-19, but isn't home for long. This three-game series against the Brewers marks the Rockies' only home dates in a 16-game stretch. Colorado, 5-13 away from Coors since the All-Star break, opens a six-game trip Tuesday against the Dodgers.

Colorado took two of three from the Brewers at Coors in late June, and has won 11 of 13 meetings there.

Troy Tulowitzki is leading this charge. The All-Star shortstop, who missed the last Milwaukee series with a fractured left wrist, is batting .625 with three homers, three doubles and seven RBIs in six career home games against the Brewers with the Rockies winning each time.

Tulowitzki, hitting .485 with five RBIs in his last eight, is also 4 for 9 with two doubles lifetime against scheduled starter Yovani Gallardo (11-5, 2.86 ERA).

Gallardo gave up four runs and eight hits while striking out seven in six innings in Sunday's 11-6 win over Houston.

The right-hander is 3-1 with a 1.30 ERA in his last five road starts -- a stretch that includes an 8-7 loss at Coors Field on June 19, when he gave up one run in six innings without a decision. Gallardo struck out nine Rockies in that game, and his 10.1 strikeouts per nine-inning ratio is best in the NL.

He'll look to keep this going against a Colorado team that struck out 10 times Thursday, and ranks fourth in the majors with 892.

The Brewers, just behind the Rockies with 885 strikeouts, avoided a four-game sweep to Arizona with Thursday's 8-4 win. Casey McGehee went 4 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs, and set a franchise record with his ninth straight hit to break the mark set by Ryan Braun in 2008.

Braun is 0 for 6 with three strikeouts after sitting out a game with a sore left wrist, and a series against Colorado might help him get back on track.

The three-time All-Star has a 17-game hitting streak against the Rockies, batting .391 with three homers, seven doubles and 14 RBIs. He is also 6 for 7 with a homer and two doubles lifetime against scheduled starter Jorge De La Rosa (4-3, 5.01).

De La Rosa gave up three runs, five hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings in Saturday's 8-7, 10-inning loss to Pittsburgh.

This will be the right-hander's first start against Milwaukee since giving up two runs and four hits with eight strikeouts in six innings of a 4-2 win June 10, 2009. He had a 14.54 ERA in losing his first two starts versus the Brewers

St. Louis (64-49) began a three-game series at Cincinnati on Monday two games back of the first-place Reds, but left with a one-game lead after outscoring them 21-8. Colby Rasmus hit his first career grand slam in Wednesday's 6-1 win, and Matt Holliday finished the series 7 for 11 with four RBIs.

The series was made even more compelling by comments from Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips, who said he hates the Cardinals. Those remarks spurred a bench-clearing brawl in the first inning Tuesday.

La Russa has been fined an undisclosed amount of money and suspended for the first two games of this series for his role in that skirmish.

By responding to Phillips' comments with a convincing sweep, St. Louis made a strong statement to the Reds that the defending NL Central champion won't go down lightly.

Jake Westbrook (0-0, 3.46 ERA) looks to set the tone for this series when he takes the ball, again seeking his first win with his new team.

After allowing two runs and four hits with seven strikeouts in six innings without a decision in a 9-4 loss to Houston in his St. Louis debut Aug. 2, Westbrook gave up three runs while striking out a season-best nine in seven innings in Saturday's 5-4, 10-inning loss to Florida.

The impressive strikeout totals are surprising for Westbrook, who averaged 5.2 strikeouts per nine innings while pitching for Cleveland. He has doubled that average with the Cardinals (11.1).

"I can't explain (the strikeouts)," the right-hander said. "Probably, for a lot of these guys, it's the first time facing me."

This will be Westbrook's first career appearance against the Cubs (48-67), and he hopes to take advantage of a Chicago team that is sixth in the majors with 865 strikeouts. The Cubs have averaged 9.1 strikeouts per game during their current 2-13 slump.

These teams have split their first six meetings, but the Cardinals should have better luck with a series in St. Louis. They went 7-2 at home against Chicago last season and are 12-3 at Busch Stadium since July 4.

Albert Pujols, 5 for 20 with four homers and eight RBIs versus the Cubs this year, is batting .478 with four home runs and seven RBIs in his last five home games.

Chicago arrives in St. Louis following Thursday's 8-7 loss in San Francisco. The Cubs dropped three of four in that series, with each loss coming by one run. Chicago is 13-29 in one-run games this season, the most such losses in the majors.

"It's just not fun at all," outfielder Marlon Byrd said. "You get sick and tired of losing. One-run games, 10-run games, it just gets old."

Thomas Diamond (0-2, 8.00) will make his third career start when he takes the mound in the opener.

Diamond lasted just three innings in Sunday's 11-4 loss to Cincinnati, allowing five runs and four hits. The right-hander had one strikeout after getting 10 against Milwaukee on Aug. 3 to tie Mark Prior for the most by a Cubs pitcher in his debut since 1920.

The Twins hope to harness the momentum from a pivotal series victory as they return to Target Field to face the Oakland Athletics on Friday night.

Minnesota (65-50) and Chicago were tied for the division lead when they began a three-game series this week, but the Twins seized a one-game edge by taking two of three to finish a 10-game road trip.

"It's a battle," Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said after Thursday's 6-1 victory. "I don't expect it any other way. ... The Central's contenders are scheduled for another three-game set next week, but first the Twins try to extend a four-game home winning streak while welcoming Oakland to Target Field for the first time.

Reigning AL MVP Joe Mauer is still looking for his first home run at the new outdoor ballpark, but he'll bring a red-hot bat into this series. The catcher is hitting .435 with 14 doubles, three homers and 27 RBIs in 23 games since the All-Star break.

He's helped the Twins average more than six runs in that stretch despite playing without star first baseman Justin Morneau, who continues to recover from a concussion.

Jason Kubel has done his best to compensate, homering four times in his last six games, including a three-run shot after an intentional walk to Mauer on Thursday.

Pavano (14-7, 3.28 ERA) has also been vital for Minnesota lately, going 9-1 in his last 12 starts. The right-hander bounced back from his lone loss in that stretch with seven strong innings in a 7-2 win at Cleveland on Saturday.

"He knows how to pitch and he's a leader," Gardenhire said.

Pavano, who has a chance to match New York's CC Sabathia and Tampa Bay's David Price for the AL lead in wins, will make his first home start since July 17, when he beat the White Sox. He's 4-0 with a 2.65 ERA in his last five home outings.

Oakland's Gio Gonzalez (10-7, 3.51) should also be confident as he returns to the mound after pitching seven shutout innings in the A's 6-2 win over Texas on Saturday to secure his first 10-win season.

"Everyone wants to win 10 games or more," Gonzalez said. "This is a difficult milestone. The 10th win is special for me and for the team. I don't want to stop now."

The emerging left-hander also can build on a strong outing against Minnesota. Gonzalez posted a 28.59 ERA in two miserable starts against the Twins last year, but he held them to two runs in seven innings of a 5-4 home win June 6.

"I did my homework this time," Gonzalez said.

The A's (57-56) lost two of three at Seattle to begin their road trip, but avoided a sweep with a 5-1 win Wednesday afternoon. With that victory, Oakland improved to 28-11 in day games, but the first two games of this series are in the evening.

This trip has been frustrating for Oakland prospect Chris Carter, who made his major league debut Monday but went 0 for 9 with five strikeouts against the Mariners.

The A's hoped Carter would provide some power after he hit 27 homers for Triple-A Sacramento this year. Oakland ranks 29th in the majors with 70 homers -- one in its last eight games.

Even a recent void in their rotation hasn't slowed down the reigning World Series champions, who've won two of Dustin Moseley's three starts since he began filling in for the injured Andy Pettitte.

Moseley (2-1, 3.86 ERA) returns to the mound after beating Boston on Sunday, when he worked 6 1/3 innings in a 7-2 victory and drew praise from the Yankees' captain.

"He throws a lot of strikes, works quick. He's going to make you hit his pitch and he's not going to walk too many guys," shortstop Derek Jeter said. "He challenges guys. He knows how to pitch."

The right-hander baffled the Royals in relief on July 24, replacing the ineffective Sergio Mitre and allowing one hit in 4 2/3 shutout innings to finish New York's 7-4 defeat.

Kansas City starter Kyle Davies (5-7, 5.21) picked up the win in that game despite allowing three home runs -- two by Mark Teixeira -- in 5 1/3 innings.

That remains the only victory for Davies in his last 12 starts, dating to the end of May. The right-hander has gone even longer since his last home win, which came against Seattle on April 26.

The Royals (47-68) have again lost five straight, their third skid of at least that length since July 9. Their 8-22 record in that stretch is the worst in the majors.

A stagnant offense has been the primary problem lately. Kansas City has scored more than three runs once in its last 10 games, batting .218 as a team over that span.

The Yankees, meanwhile, lead the majors in runs. They got a boost Thursday from newcomer Austin Kearns, who hit his first home run since New York acquired him from Cleveland in a July 30 trade.

Curtis Granderson went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, getting both hits against Royals left-hander Bruce Chen. Granderson was in a 3 for 29 slump overall and was batting .206 against lefties this season before the game.

"They're a good ball club, they're hot, and they're playing good," Chen said of the Yankees.

New York could be even tougher Friday with star closer Mariano Rivera available. Rivera had pitched on four of the previous five days before Thursday, when David Robertson got the final out for his first save of the year, stranding the tying run on third base.

Guillen's club opens a six-game road trip Tuesday in Minnesota but first will try to earn its 12th win in 16 games against the Tigers (55-59). The White Sox picked up three of those victories during a four-game series at Comerica Park Aug. 3-5 and took two of three at U.S. Cellular from June 8-10.

Mark Buehrle (10-9, 4.04 ERA) will try to help his team break out of a 2-5 slump with his fifth straight win over the Tigers and second in 11 days. The left-hander gave up two runs over 7 2/3 innings in a 12-2 rout Aug. 3.

Buehrle has won seven of his last 10 decisions but lost Sunday in Baltimore, giving up four runs and 10 hits over seven innings in a 4-3 defeat.

He's 15-8 with a 2.95 ERA in 28 career starts against the Tigers, including 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA in seven matchups since July 23, 2007.

Detroit salvaged the finale of a three-game home series against Tampa Bay with a 3-2 victory Wednesday, but has dropped 22 of 29 overall and 12 of 13 on the road. The Tigers are 17-35 away from home, third-worst in the AL.

"Hopefully we're able to carry (the win over Tampa Bay) into Chicago and New York and beat up some tough teams," pitcher Justin Verlander said. "Chicago is one of the teams we need to catch and we need to gain some ground on them."

Jeremy Bonderman (6-7, 4.96) will make his first road start since a win over Minnesota on June 28. He has a 6.50 ERA in his last eight outings overall and lost his most recent one on three days' rest, giving up four runs and four walks over 4 1/3 innings in Saturday's 10-1 defeat to the Los Angeles Angels.

Bonderman had lost four straight starts versus the White Sox before winning his only game against them this year, going 6 2/3 strong innings in a 7-1 home victory Aug. 3. However, he's 2-5 with a 5.48 ERA in eight career games at U.S. Cellular.

The status of Chicago reliever Bobby Jenks is unknown after he left in the ninth inning of Thursday's loss with back spasms.

New York (57-57) is unlikely to make another championship run, nine games behind first-place Atlanta due to its 9-17 record since the All-Star break. The Mets have hit .215 in that span while averaging 3.0 runs.

The Phillies (64-50) are within two games of the Braves thanks to their 16-4 record since July 21. During that stretch, the two-time reigning NL champions are batting .300 while averaging 5.5 runs.

The teams hadn't met since that series in New York until last weekend. Philadelphia totaled 13 runs and 23 hits in two wins and was shut out in the other game, but that came against Johan Santana and he won't pitch in this series after throwing a four-hitter to beat Colorado 4-0 on Thursday.

That win gave New York only its second series victory since June 27.

"Every game for us is very important," Santana told the Mets' official website. "Every time we go out there, we go out there with the mentality of winning."

Cole Hamels (7-8, 3.45 ERA) should be happy not facing Santana again after losing to the Mets ace in Saturday's 1-0 defeat despite a season-high 11 strikeouts in seven innings.

Hamels received no runs of support for the seventh time in 14 starts, a stretch during which he's 2-6 despite a 3.15 ERA.

"I think if I can just go out there and play my part as much as I possibly can, and go deep in ballgames and execute, that's all I can really do and that's all I can really control," Hamels told the Phillies' official website.

He's 1-6 in his last eight outings against the Mets, getting nine runs of support -- none in two losses this year. The left-hander is 0-3 with a 4.98 ERA in six starts in Queens.

Battery mate Carlos Ruiz delivered the game-winning two-run double in the ninth inning Thursday of a 10-9 victory over Los Angeles. Jayson Werth, batting .480 in his last seven games, drove in two runs for the Phillies, who scored eight times in the final two innings.

Philadelphia now looks to beat R.A. Dickey (7-5, 2.65) again after handing the knuckleballer his worst start of the season Sunday, when he was tagged for six runs and eight hits in three innings of a 6-5 defeat. He had a 1.59 ERA in his previous five outings.

Dickey, however, is 4-1 with a 1.53 ERA at home and beat Philadelphia there May 25, going six innings in an 8-0 victory.

The Phillies have never scored in 15 innings against Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez, but he won't be available for at least the series opener due to his arrest Wednesday for assaulting his girlfriend's father at Citi Field. Rodriguez was placed on the restricted list Thursday for two days without pay.

"He feels sorry about what happened, but it's too late," New York's Carlos Beltran said. "We all have family issues. But those family issues should be addressed at the house, not near the ballpark."

Seattle (44-71) took two of three at home against Oakland in its first series since Brown replaced the fired Don Wakamatsu as manager Monday. "I've enjoyed the first three games," Brown told the Mariners' official website. "I like the fact we took two-out-of three, (but) it's always a matter what are you going to do tomorrow?"

That means winning on the road, something Seattle hasn't done much in 2010.

The Mariners, an AL-worst 15-39 away from home, are mired in their worst road losing stretch since dropping 13 straight in September 2008. They went 0-7 on their last trip and carry a 21-inning road scoreless streak heading into their first meeting this season with the Indians (48-67). Seattle went 4-3 at Cleveland in 2009.

Despite the Mariners' road struggles, Brown is eager to embark on his first trip as manager for a team that has won four of six.

"I'm looking forward to it," Brown said. "I look at the positives of it. We just won two series in a row. Hopefully, that's a positive going in. If we get good pitching, play good defense and get some timely hits, I think we'll be OK."

Not getting those timely hits has plagued the Mariners, who have a .233 average with runners in scoring position and are last in the majors with 370 runs. However, a couple of Seattle's stars have hit well of late.

Former Indian Franklin Gutierrez is batting .250, but he's 10 for 31 with six RBIs in his last nine games. Ichiro Suzuki is hitting .351 in his last nine.

Suzuki, though, is 2 for 10 against Cleveland's scheduled starter, Fausto Carmona (11-9, 3.90 ERA).

The right-hander is 2-0 with a 2.18 ERA in three starts against the Mariners, but he's looking to bounce back after giving up five runs in 7 1/3 innings of a 7-2 loss to Minnesota on Saturday.

Carmona has a 6.88 ERA while losing two of his last three outings.

"I want to win," Carmona told the Indians' official website. "I have to keep the ball down and make them hit groundballs."

Michael Brantley had four hits and Trevor Crowe drove in two runs as Cleveland snapped a four-game skid with a 4-1 win over Baltimore on Thursday.

Crowe is 6 for 13 with three RBIs in his last four games, and Brantley is 9 for 24 in his last six. Neither player has faced Seattle during their careers.

The Indians will get their first look at Seattle's David Pauley (0-4, 3.38), who makes his 19th career appearance and 11th start still searching for his first victory.

In his fifth start this season, the right-hander allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings of a 2-1 loss to Kansas City on Saturday.

"I say it every time, he's been unbelievable all year long," Astros manager Brad Mills said of Myers, 3-1 with a 2.36 ERA in his last seven starts.

The right-hander has been even better versus Pittsburgh (39-75) of late, posting a 2.11 ERA while winning his last three starts. He is 2-0 with a 2.63 ERA against the Pirates this season.

Though the Astros (48-65) have lost six of seven overall, Myers gives them a good chance to improve to 7-0 at home against the Pirates. Houston has outscored Pittsburgh 33-13 at Minute Maid Park this season.

Houston rookie Chris Johnson is 3 for 21 against the Pirates this year, but is batting .441 with a homer and 12 RBIs in his last nine games. The third baseman is hitting .361 with five home runs and 33 RBIs in 48 games this season.

Though Hunter Pence went 2 for 10 while the Astros lost two of three to Atlanta this week, he is 12 for 30 with two home runs and six RBIs against the Pirates in 2010. He is 6 for 16 against scheduled starter Ross Ohlendrof (1-9, 4.23).

Ohlendorf is 0-6 with a 7.49 ERA in seven starts against Houston, including 0-1 with a 6.48 ERA in two this season.

Though the right-hander has not won since July 2, he has a 2.55 ERA over his last four starts. He allowed two runs and struck out six in six innings of an 8-7, 10-inning win over Colorado on Saturday.

Pittsburgh looks to avoid a fifth straight loss overall and eighth in a row on the road after being swept at San Diego. Ryan Doumit had two of the Pirates' four hits in a 3-0 loss to the NL West-leading Padres on Thursday.

Doumit, 4 for 12 in four games since coming off the disabled list while recovering from a concussion, is 11 for 24 against the Astros this season.

To have success this weekend, Pittsburgh likely will need leadoff hitter Andrew McCutchen to get back on track after he went 0 for 10 against the Padres. McCutchen is 4 for 7 with a double against Myers.

Like Texas, Boston (66-50) is looking to rebound after being on the wrong end of a comeback victory. Three outs away from their fourth straight win, the Red Sox surrendered four ninth-inning runs as Jonathan Papelbon suffered his AL-worst sixth blown save in a 6-5 loss to Toronto on Thursday.

Boston, trailing Tampa Bay by four games for the wild card, fell to 4-3 on its 10-game trip.

"I didn't have much power or energy in my delivery today," said Papelbon, one save shy of becoming the first pitcher to reach 30 in his first five seasons.

Josh Beckett (3-2, 6.21) will look to bounce back while helping the Red Sox do the same.

The right-hander is coming off his worst outing of the year, allowing seven runs and a season-high 11 hits over 4 2/3 innings of a 7-2 road loss to the Yankees on Sunday.

While Beckett owns a 6.23 ERA in seven road starts this season, he is 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA in three career outings in Arlington.

Josh Hamilton, the only player selected ahead of Beckett in the 1999 draft, is 4 for 9 with a homer against him. The major leagues' leading hitter at .357, Hamilton has batted .438 with 12 homers and 33 RBIs at home since May 11.

He went 10 for 27 with five doubles and a home run as Texas took four of seven at Boston this season.

Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz is batting .310 on the trip and hit a solo homer Thursday. Ortiz, though, has gone 2 for 18 with eight strikeouts versus Texas this season.

He has two hits and a homer in eight at-bats against Hunter, who has gone 6-0 with a 2.53 ERA in seven home starts.

Texas, winner of 11 of 16 against Boston since the beginning of last season, went 5-1 at home against the Red Sox in 2009.

The Braves (66-48) earned their third consecutive series victory Wednesday with an 8-2 victory in 10 innings over Houston. They've won six of eight and enter this four-game set two games ahead of Philadelphia in the division.

The Braves, though, lost Jones for the season when he hurt his left knee Tuesday. The 38-year-old third baseman was diagnosed with a torn ACL following an MRI exam Thursday.

The injury comes at a time when Atlanta already had one of its top hitters, Martin Prado, on the disabled list with a fractured finger. Plus, the status of rookie outfielder Jason Heyward is unclear after a sore right knee forced him to miss the last two games.

At the time of his injury, Jones was hitting .307 in his previous 44 games and was 11 for 23 (.478) in his last six. Omar Infante and Brooks Conrad are expected to split time at third in his place, though Prado could shift to that spot from second base upon his expected return early next week.

"His presence in our lineup has been increasing based on his performance the last couple of months," general manager Frank Wren said of Jones. "He was a force. So, yeah, we're losing a lot."

Fortunately for Atlanta, Hudson (13-5, 2.24 ERA) has been at his best lately. The right-hander has a 0.63 ERA in his last four starts and yielded three hits over eight innings in Saturday's 3-0 win over San Francisco.

Hudson will try to build off that performance for his first win over the Dodgers (59-56) since May 31, 2006. He's 0-2 with a 5.04 ERA in his last four starts against them, including one at Dodger Stadium on June 6.

Hudson allowed four runs and nine hits over seven innings in that game but did not get a decision in a 5-4 defeat.

He enters this matchup 8-2 with a 1.92 ERA in his last 10 home starts, winning the past three while allowing one run in 21 innings.

The Braves, 34-11 at home since April 29, split four games in Los Angeles from June 3-6.

The Dodgers are coming off a deflating 10-9 loss to Philadelphia on Thursday night, which denied them a first road series win since the All-Star break. Los Angeles led 9-2 through seven innings but four relievers, including closer Jonathan Broxton, combined to give up four runs in each of the final two.

Broxton failed to record an out during his third blown save in five chances since the All-Star break, walking two batters and hitting another before giving up the game-winning two-run double.

"Guys play on their heels when the pitcher's not throwing strikes," said Broxton, who has a 10.13 ERA with 11 walks in his last eight appearances.

The Dodgers, losers in 11 of 13 away from home, will try to rebound by helping Hiroki Kuroda (8-10, 3.65) avoid a career high-tying third consecutive defeat. The right-hander, who already has two three-game losing streaks this season, is 1-5 with a 4.54 ERA in his last seven starts.

Kuroda is 1-2 with a 2.14 ERA in three career matchups with Atlanta, losing his only game at Turner Field on April 20, 2008.

After closing a homestand with two losses to Minnesota, Tampa Bay (69-45) was swept in Toronto for its first five-game skid of the season. The Rays rebounded with two wins in Detroit before failing to complete the sweep with Wednesday's 3-2 loss.

Despite the 2-6 stretch, Tampa Bay is only two games behind the AL East-leading Yankees and four ahead of Boston in the wild-card race.

"Our standards are set high," manager Joe Maddon said. "We are aiming to win a division and go deep into the postseason, so we want to win every game."

Maddon will be happy to get back home where his club has won 14 of 18. The Rays have posted a 2.96 ERA during that span compared to a 4.68 mark in their last 18 road games.

Tampa Bay is 16-5 at home versus the Orioles since 2008 and won two of three at Tropicana Field against Baltimore (40-75) in April.

The Orioles team the Rays faced then, however, has a different look now.

Most notable is new manager Buck Showalter, who has guided the club to eight wins in 10 games since taking over for Juan Samuel.

Getting leadoff batter Brian Roberts back also has helped the Orioles, who are 30-62 this season without their second baseman and 10-10 since he returned to the lineup July 23.

"I've liked their personnel a lot," Maddon told the Rays' official website. "Now they've got Roberts back and they've got (Matt) Wieters back. They've got (Luke) Scott back. That's three major offensive players. Their biggest concern has been their pitching, and their pitching has picked up, too."

No Baltimore pitcher has picked it up more lately than Jeremy Guthrie (6-11, 4.04 ERA), who looks to win three straight starts for the first time in two years. The right-hander has been outstanding in five outings since the All-Star break, going 3-1 with a 1.77 ERA. He has walked three and struck out 21 in that span.

Guthrie outpitched White Sox ace Mark Buehrle in a 4-3 victory Sunday, yielding one run and six hits over eight innings.

He has had quality starts in five of six career outings at Tampa Bay but is 0-4 with a 4.84 ERA.

The Rays counter with James Shields (10-10, 4.91), who became only the eighth pitcher in the modern era to surrender six homers in a game in Saturday's 17-11 loss at Toronto. Bidding to win his fourth consecutive start, the right-hander allowed eight runs and nine hits -- all for extra bases -- in four innings.

"I've forgotten about it," Shields said. "I threw a bullpen and I'm exactly where I need to be. So you kind of forget about it and move on."

Shields, who gave up five home runs in six outings before Saturday, is 7-2 with a 3.15 ERA in 17 starts against Baltimore.

Adam Jones is 10 for 22 with a homer and five doubles against Shields.

Zambrano makes his first start in more than a month as the volatile right-hander leads the Cubs into a four-game road series against the Giants on Monday night.

San Francisco (63-49) has scored nine runs while dropping four of five and trails NL West-leading San Diego by two games while leading Philadelphia by one-half game for the wild card. The Giants lost three of four at Atlanta over the weekend, falling 6-3 on Sunday.

"We've had rough stretches before and have battled back and found ways to win games," said first baseman Travis Ishikawa, who homered Sunday.

"Spiraling out of control? We need to turn it around, no question," said manager Lou Piniella, who will not be with the team during this series while attending to his ill mother. While his team isn't in a playoff race, Zambrano (3-6, 5.61 ERA) is still facing a lot of pressure as he tries to redeem himself during what has been a disappointing season. Zambrano got into an altercation with Derrek Lee during a June 25 dugout meltdown and was placed on the restricted list while he underwent anger-management therapy.

The right-hander has made three relief appearances since being activated, giving up two runs and six hits in 3 2/3 innings. His return to the rotation comes because Chicago is short-handed after Ted Lilly was traded and Carlos Silva was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Zambrano, the Cubs' opening day starter who was demoted to the bullpen in April after struggling in his first four starts, told the team's official website he is eager to return to form.

"Sometimes you don't know what you have until you lose it," he said. "When you lose it, you realize you have something good in your career, your life, and I don't want to lose this opportunity."

Facing San Francisco might be a good way for him to start things off. Zambrano is 5-1 with a 2.86 ERA in eight starts against the Giants, pitching a two-hitter at AT&T Park on Sept. 25.

Edgar Renteria has had some success against Zambrano, hitting .387 and walking seven times, but he hasn't played since Thursday because of a strained left biceps.

Madison Bumgarner (4-4, 3.20) will take the mound for San Francisco, trying to avoid a third straight loss.

The left-hander, making his first start against the Cubs, gave up four runs and nine hits in a season-low four innings of a 6-1 loss to Colorado on Wednesday.

The right-hander did not get a decision Tuesday in a 3-2 home loss to Kansas City after allowing two runs in six innings.

Seattle second baseman Chone Figgins is 3 for 4 against Mazzaro and has been hitting well on this homestand. Figgins went 2 for 3 in a 3-2 win over the Royals on Sunday and is 12 for 23 over his last six games at Safeco.

"Over the last couple of months I've been attacking the baseball and getting on top of it more and hitting more line drives and hard ground balls and that's my game," Figgins said.

The Mariners received bad news after learning that shortstop Jack Wilson fractured a bone in his right hand in an accident at his home. They said Wilson slipped and fell in his bathroom, hitting his hand on the floor.

The injury may be bad news for Oakland since Wilson is 2 for 23 against the A's this year.

Seattle starter Doug Fister (3-8, 3.98) has pitched well against Oakland, going 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA in four career starts. He's given up one run over 15 innings in winning both outings against the Athletics at home.

The right-hander, however, is 0-7 with a 5.65 ERA in his last 11 starts. Fister gave up a season-high seven runs over 4 2/3 innings Wednesday in an 11-6 home loss to Texas.

Yet for a pitching staff that's on its way to having one of the majors' five-worst ERAs (5.04) for a second straight season, Kansas City is happy to have another promising young arm.

"The first thing I asked Scioscia when I was traded was, 'Hey, am I going somewhere where they wanted me? Were they asking for me?'" O'Sullivan told MLB's official website. "And he told me yes. I just want to be somewhere where they want me to pitch, where I'm going to get a chance to establish myself at this level and help this team win."

O'Sullivan's mound opponent is Ervin Santana, whose injury in June 2009 led to him making his major league debut.

Santana (10-8, 4.11) can only wish he missed his most recent start. The right-hander surrendered nine runs and 12 hits in 3 2/3 innings in a 9-7 loss at Baltimore on Wednesday.

"Nothing I can do, just forget about this one and get to the next one," Santana told the Angels' official website. "I had good stuff in the bullpen. I'm just going to leave this in this ballpark and get to the next (game)."

Santana is 4-4 with a 4.47 ERA in nine starts against the Royals.

He might have a good shot at bouncing back from last week's dreadful outing. The Royals lost 3-2 in Seattle on Sunday to fall to 2-4 on their road trip, in which they've totaled 11 runs while hitting .198.

"Sometimes you go through times like this," designated hitter Brayan Pena told the Royals' official website. "We're putting the ball in play, and I think we're going to do better and, hopefully, in the Angels series we're going to score some runs."

Kansas City won two of three last month in Anaheim despite being outscored 13-6.

The Brewers have a good chance to stay hot Monday night as they seek an eighth consecutive victory over the Diamondbacks.

Milwaukee (53-59) won five straight July 22-26, notching four victories over last-place teams Washington and Pittsburgh, before enduring a five-game skid. The Brewers have bounced back to score 47 runs in winning five of six, posting a three-game sweep of Houston with Sunday's 11-6 win.

Monday's series opener features the same pitching matchup as when the clubs last met May 9 in Phoenix.

Chris Narveson (9-7, 5.68 ERA) tries to join teammate Yovani Gallardo as the second Brewer to reach double-digit wins. The left-hander gave up a run and six hits over 5 2/3 innings in a 4-3 win over the Cubs on Tuesday.

He also went 1 for 3 with an RBI, increasing his average to .313 (10 for 32).

"Helping yourself out at the plate has always been a big competition with the pitchers here," Narveson said of a staff that counts Gallardo and Randy Wolf as quality hitters. "That was huge."

Narveson is 1-0 with a 4.22 ERA in three games -- two starts -- against the Diamondbacks. His hit May 9 off Ian Kennedy (6-9, 4.40) drove in the eventual winning run in a 6-1 victory.

Kennedy pitched well in the loss, surrendering two runs over seven innings in his lone career start against Milwaukee.

This time, he'll look to recover after his shortest outing of the season. The right-hander's innings are being limited in the second half, but manager Kirk Gibson didn't have a choice Wednesday after watching Kennedy give up four runs and eight hits over four innings in a 7-2 loss to Washington.

"I thought he was up, struggled with his location," Gibson told the Diamondbacks' official website. "... He's really grinding. He's probably mad at me. I know how it is, I understand."

Arizona won its next three games after Kennedy's rough outing but couldn't make it four straight Sunday. After consecutive one-run wins over first-place San Diego, the Diamondbacks lost 10-1 to finish their homestand 4-3.

"We played well this homestand," said center fielder Chris Young, the only Diamondback to homer off Narveson. "Lately we've been turning things around, playing hard, playing the game the right way, playing small ball, getting big hits when we need them. It's been nice."

Mike Minor will make his major league debut when the Braves open a three-game series against the Houston Astros on Monday night.

Atlanta (64-47) took three of four from San Francisco over the weekend, winning 6-3 on Sunday to maintain a two-game lead over Philadelphia and complete a 5-2 homestand. Its next three games are on the road, where the club has dropped seven of 10.

"I don't think we really have road woes," catcher David Ross told the Braves' official website. "But obviously we want to go to Houston and take care of business."

The Braves have posted a 1.73 ERA in their last eight games. Atlanta is fourth in the NL with a 3.50 ERA.

A key contributor to that success was Kris Medlen, who was 6-2 with a 3.68 ERA before being placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right elbow. The Braves are waiting to see if he'll need surgery.

Although Medlen had replaced Kenshin Kawakami in the rotation, Atlanta chose to call up Minor instead of moving Kawakami back into a starter's role. Minor, the seventh overall draft pick in 2009, was 4-1 with a 1.89 ERA in six Triple-A starts.

"The Braves wouldn't call guys up if they weren't ready," third baseman Chipper Jones said. "He's a first-round pick. We spent a lot of money on him. Somebody out there thinks he's a pretty darn good pitcher."

Jones will try to help provide the left-hander with the kind of run support the Braves gave their pitchers during their last series with the Astros (47-63). Atlanta outscored Houston 21-4 in sweeping the three-game set April 30-May 2.

Houston has lost four in a row and was swept over the weekend by Milwaukee, getting outscored 30-17 in the three games. It lost 11-6 on Sunday after Wesley Wright failed to make it out of the third inning, giving up seven runs.

The Cardinals, who had the finale of their three-game set at Florida postponed because of rain, have won seven of 12 season meetings with the Reds. The clubs have split six matchups at Cincinnati.

The Reds have won nine of 11, outscoring opponents 70-33 during that span. They extended their winning streak to four by beating Chicago 11-4 on Sunday.

Manager Dusty Baker is looking forward to the matchup with the Cardinals.

"Its time," Baker said. "They had been wanting us to focus on it but we had to focus on the Cubs. To come in here and get a sweep in Chicago is big for us."

Joey Votto had two hits, two RBIs and four runs Sunday. He is hitting .325 with two home runs and three RBIs against St. Louis this season, and is 6 for 15 with a homer off Carpenter.

Jonny Gomes is also hot, going 6 for 17 with two doubles and seven runs in five games. He had a hit, four walks and four runs Sunday.

The left fielder has gone 8 for 14 with two homers and three RBIs in four home games against St. Louis.

"We're playing good right now," said Gomes, 0 for 7 with five strikeouts against Carpenter.

The Reds will give the ball to rookie Mike Leake (7-3, 3.86), who lost his last two starts with a 7.94 ERA.

The right-hander was a victim of a big inning Tuesday, giving up six of seven runs in the second before getting pulled after the fifth in a 7-6 loss at Pittsburgh.

Leake won his only meeting with St. Louis on May 15 by outpitching Adam Wainwright in a 4-3 home victory. He allowed two runs and struck out five in six innings.

Leake held Albert Pujols to a single while walking him twice -- once intentionally -- in that contest.

The lack of production cost Price a chance to become the AL's first 15-game winner. He's tied with Minnesota's Carl Pavano and New York's CC Sabathia for the lead in victories, and his ERA is among the lowest in the AL.

Price may be in good position to take over the wins lead as he faces Detroit (54-57).

The Rays swept a four-game home set with the Tigers from July 26-29, with Price capping the series with a 4-2 win. He allowed two runs and struck out nine in 6 1/3 innings.

He has gone 2-0 with a 1.65 ERA in four games -- two starts -- against Detroit.

The Tigers are trying to win consecutive games for just the second time since a five-game winning streak July 5-10. They are 6-20 since and have fallen out of the Central race.

Detroit is coming off a 9-4 victory over Los Angeles on Sunday, ending a four-game slide in which it scored eight runs.

The Tigers will give the ball Armando Galarraga (3-4, 4.32), who has gone 1/3 with a 5.48 ERA in his last eight starts.

The right-hander allowed four runs and walked five in 7 2/3 innings of a 4-1 loss to Chicago on Wednesday. Manager Jim Leyland feels that a lack of confidence is playing a part in Galarraga's troubles.

"I think Galarraga is a perfect example of a guy that his stuff is better than he trusts at times," Leyland told the team's official website. "And I think when he learns to trust his stuff a little bit more, he'll be even better. And I think with him, the more he starts to believe in his stuff, the better he'll be. If he doesn't, he's going to have problems."

Galarraga has gone 1-0 with a 6.35 ERA in three starts against the Rays. He lasted 2 1/3 innings in his most recent matchup with them Sept. 5, surrendering six runs and walking three in an 8-6 win.

The win also snapped a personal four-game losing streak in which Jackson had a 7.25 ERA.

Monday's start will be critical for Jackson as he tries to help his new club split a four-game series against the major league-worst Orioles. The White Sox are trying to build momentum before playing six of their next nine against Minnesota, which trails Chicago by a half-game.

Jackson has won his last four starts against the Orioles, giving up two runs and five hits over 16 innings in the last two.

However, Jackson may not get much support as Baltimore's starting pitching has been hot during the series.

The Orioles (37-74) posted a 4-3 win Sunday, their fifth in six game under new manager Buck Showalter as Felix Pie homered and Jeremy Guthrie gave up one run in eight innings. Baltimore's starters are 3-0 with a 1.94 ERA and each has gone six innings under Showalter.

"It's not like these guys have never pitched well this year," he said. "And they seem to be feeding off each other."

Chicago, which scored 23 runs during four games at Detroit last week, has totaled eight against the Orioles so far.

"It's a combination of good pitching and we're not hitting right now," Guillen said. "Right now our bats are very silent."

The White Sox are batting .243 in the series, 20 points below their season average.

Alex Rios had two hits with an RBI Sunday after batting .139 (5 for 36) in the previous nine games.

Rios is the only White Sox player that has faced Brian Matusz (4-11, 5.26), who will take the mound for Baltimore and is coming off his best start in a month. Rios is 1 for 2 against the left-hander.

Matusz gave up one run in six innings of a 9-7 win over Los Angeles on Wednesday. He was 0-2 with a 12.46 ERA in his previous four starts, which lasted a combined 13 innings.

Chicago second baseman Gordon Beckham left Sunday with a strained groin, and Guillen intends to rest him for this contest. Beckham has batted .390 over his last 24 games, and is hitting .251 after struggling for much of the first half of the season.

"I'm in a funk right now," said Lester, who has received three runs of support during his slide. "Weird things are happening. I've just got to keep working. Am I throwing the ball the best I can? No. But I've just got to keep grinding it out."

The Rockies, however, lost center fielder Dexter Fowler in the ninth inning when he crashed into the wall after catching a sacrifice fly. He was carted off the field and initially diagnosed with a left rib and hip contusion. Aaron Cook (4-7, 5.08 ERA) will start after X-rays showed no damage after he fouled a ball off his left foot during batting practice Saturday.

Cook, though, has been running into plenty of problems, going 0-2 with a 13.50 ERA in his last two starts. The right-hander surrendered five runs and six hits over a season-low 2 1/3 innings of Wednesday's 6-2 loss to Pittsburgh. It was his shortest outing of the season and first loss at Coors Field since Aug. 21.

"I gave them too many pitches to hit," said Cook, 1-1 with a 5.84 ERA in two starts against San Francisco this season.

Giants left fielder Pat Burrell has hit plenty of pitches off the right-hander, going 13 for 22 with a homer. He is batting .336 in 32 career games in Denver.

Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who was on the disabled list with a fractured left wrist during last month's series against the Giants, is 7 for 15 with a home run versus Sanchez.

The right-hander, 4-1 with a 1.60 ERA in five overall outings versus the Cardinals, has allowed one earned run and struck out 22 in 20 innings while winning all three of his starts at St. Louis -- two this season.

"I know what I'm capable of when I do it right," said Norris, who did allow five runs in 7 2/3 innings of an 8-0 home loss in his last appearance against St. Louis on July 9.

Norris gave up one run and struck out seven in six innings of an 8-1 win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday for his first victory since winning at St. Louis on May 13. He had gone 0-3 with a 6.13 ERA in seven starts and spent time on the disabled list (biceps tendinitis) between victories.

Albert Pujols is 3 for 14 with two doubles against Norris, but has homered in three straight games. The two-time reigning NL MVP is batting .432 with three home runs and 11 RBIs against the Astros this season.

Jaime Garcia (9-4, 2.33) looks to continue his success at home and become the Cardinals' third 10-game winner when he makes his first career appearance against the Astros.

Among the major-league ERA leaders, the rookie left-hander went 2-0 with a 2.51 ERA in five July starts. Both wins came at home, where Garcia is 4-1 with a 1.46 ERA in nine outings.

He allowed three runs in six innings of an 8-7, 13-inning road win over the New York Mets on Wednesday.

Garcia will try to contain Houston's Jeff Keppinger, who is 8 for 16 in his last four games after recording two hits and four RBIs on Monday. The second baseman is 13 for 30 with 11 RBIs in eight games against the Cardinals in 2010.

"I guess I've got guys in front of me getting on base, giving me opportunities to drive in runs, and fortunately I've been coming through," Keppinger said.

Coming off their second-highest scoring game of the season, the Brewers look to extend the Cubs' season-high skid to seven games Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.

Both Milwaukee (49-58) and Chicago entered Monday's series opener riding five-game losing streaks but after totaling two runs and 14 hits at Houston over the weekend, the Brewers broke out for a season-high 26 hits in an 18-1 rout of the Cubs.

The Brewers, who totaled eight runs and 31 hits during their recent losing stretch, scored their most runs since a 20-0 win at Pittsburgh on April 22.

Prince Fielder had five hits and drove in five runs. Fielder had one more hit Monday than he did in 22 at-bats over his previous seven games. He had seven hits in his previous nine games against the Cubs.

"This has been a goal of mine to stay in Milwaukee long term," said the two-time All-Star, who is batting .294 with 23 homers and 73 RBIs, and .371 with six RBIs versus Chicago this season. "They're very accommodating to let me to that."

While Milwaukee hopes to string together some victories, the Cubs (46-60) look to end a skid where they have been outscored 63-17.

Chicago pitchers have a 10.47 ERA during the skid, and it remains uncertain if that can be lowered when Thomas Diamond makes his major league debut Tuesday.

The right-hander was promoted from Triple-A Iowa to take the place of Ted Lilly, who was traded to the Dodgers on Saturday. Diamond, acquired after being waived by Texas in September, was 5-4 with a 3.16 ERA in 21 starts for Iowa.

Milwaukee counters with Chris Narveson (8-7, 5.90 ERA), who hopes this start goes as well as his only other against the Cubs when he allowed a run and struck out a career-high 10 in a 3-2 win Sept. 23.

Narveson, 1-0 with an 8.44 ERA in four relief appearances against Chicago this season, is 0-1 with a 6.55 ERA in his last two starts. The left-hander gave up three runs in five innings of a 10-2 loss to Cincinnati on Wednesday.

Starlin Castro had two of Chicago's four hits Tuesday. Despite his team's struggles, the rookie shortstop is batting .405 in his last 19 games.

The surging Minnesota Twins missed out on a chance to do the same in the AL Central, but they hope to have Joe Mauer back in the lineup Tuesday night as they continue a four-game series at Tropicana Field.

The Rays (66-39) took two of three from New York over the weekend, then pulled even with the Yankees on Monday after a 4-2 win over the Twins and Toronto's 8-6 victory in the Bronx.

"We had this planned out. This is what we think is the right thing to do," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "(Hellickson) did his job. We've got five nice starters that got an extra day of rest because of him with a win."

Tampa Bay had been the only team in the majors that had used only five starting pitchers before Monday, and Jeff Niemann (9-3, 3.08 ERA) returns to the mound Tuesday in hopes of becoming the fourth Rays starter to pick up his 10th victory.

The right-hander, however, hasn't been at his best since the All-Star break, posting a 5.19 ERA and walking nine in three starts. He beat Detroit on Wednesday despite allowing four runs -- including two homers -- in six innings of a 7-4 win.

"Jeff wasn't as sharp as he normally is," Maddon told the Rays' official website. "They actually hit balls hard against him tonight, which you don't normally see."

The Twins (59-47) could have tied the White Sox atop the Central with a ninth consecutive win, but they played their second straight game without Mauer after the reigning AL MVP had a cortisone shot to his right shoulder.

"He's OK. A little sore still from the shot," Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He feels better. Give him another day and see where he's at."

Minnesota also continues to play without first baseman Justin Morneau, who's on the disabled list recovering from a concussion.

Delmon Young has done his best to compensate, extending his hitting streak to 12 with a single Monday. Young, who is batting .481 with 17 RBIs during the streak, has gone 3 for 5 with a home run in his career against Niemann.

A reliable reliever for the Twins for most of the season, Duensing has also been sharp as a starter, allowing three runs over 11 innings at Baltimore and Kansas City. The left-hander beat the Royals on Wednesday, giving up two runs in six innings of a 6-4 victory.

Tampa Bay may be content to rest Carlos Pena (right foot soreness) for a third straight game considering he's batting .185 against southpaws.

Halladay returns to the site of his perfect game when he takes the mound in the opener of a three-game series against the Florida Marlins on Tuesday night.

Halladay (12-8, 2.21 ERA) threw the 20th perfect game in major league history at Florida on May 29, striking out 11 in a 1-0 win.

That historic performance, however, stands as the right-hander's only win in his last six road starts. Halladay may be in position to reverse that trend after winning consecutive home starts. He gave up one run and 11 hits while striking out 18 in 17 innings to beat Colorado and Arizona.

The seven-time All-Star threw a six-hitter in a 7-1 win over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

Philadelphia (57-48) may need another strong effort from Halladay with Ryan Howard out for the series opener. The All-Star first baseman left the team to have his injured left ankle examined by the team physician in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Howard, the 2006 NL MVP, sprained his ankle by stepping awkwardly on second base during Sunday's 6-4, 11-inning win at last-place Washington, as the Phillies avoided a sweep.

"It's just swollen. It's tight, sore. Other than that, it's not too, too bad," Howard said.

Howard is in a 2-for-20 slump over his last six games after batting .372 with five homers and 13 RBIs in his first 11 after the All-Star break.

Philadelphia is already without Chase Utley (sprained right thumb) and Shane Victorino (abdominal strain), who are on the disabled list.

The Phillies have split eight meetings with the Marlins, taking two of three at Sun Life Stadium in May to improve to 11-3 in their last 14 games there.

Florida returns home, where it has won seven of nine, after ending a 4-3 road trip with Sunday's 5-4 loss to San Diego.

Sean West will make his first appearance of the season after he went 8-6 with a 4.79 ERA in 20 starts last year, going 6-2 with a 3.29 ERA in 10 outings at home.

The left-hander, replacing the ineffective Alex Sanabia in the rotation, went 4-3 with a 3.12 ERA in 11 starts for Triple-A New Orleans.

"He's also started games up here," pitching coach Randy St. Claire told the Marlins' official website. "It's not like this is his first go-round. He's had success up here, and he knows he can do it. You hope this is his second taste and he has that, 'I'm here. This is now. Let's stay here.'"

West allowed three runs and seven hits in four innings of a 6-4 win at Philadelphia on Aug. 8.

The Braves look to add to the majors' best home record Tuesday night at Turner Field against the crumbling Mets, who try to avoid falling under .500 for the first time since May 23.

Atlanta (60-45) went 3-6 on its recently-completed road trip and saw its NL East lead shrink to 2 1/2 games over Philadelphia, but didn't allow the idle Phillies to come any closer Monday.

The Braves improved to 35-13 at Turner Field thanks to a player making his home debut with his new team. "(It was) perfect," said Ankiel, who's hitting .387 with eight RBIs in his last eight games. "It was good to get the first one out of the way."

The loss dropped the Mets (53-53) to .500 -- 7 1/2 games behind Atlanta -- and there appears to be little hope in sight for Jerry Manuel's club. New York has dropped 16 of 22 since July 7, when it was two games behind the Braves.

Though there have been few bright spots since the All-Star break for the Mets, Tuesday's starter is certainly one. R.A. Dickey (7-4, 2.32 ERA) has a 1.29 ERA in four starts since the break, though he was 0-2 in that span prior to Thursday's outing at St. Louis.

The knuckleballer finally got some support against the Cardinals. Dickey held St. Louis to four hits over 8 1/3 innings -- his longest outing since 2004 -- and Ike Davis hit a three-run homer in a 4-0 victory.

"He does a tremendous job," Manuel said of Dickey. "He right now seems to get through the lineup two or three times relatively easy. And that's tough to do at this level -- for anybody."

Dickey had only faced the Braves in relief prior to July 9, when he gave up four runs and nine hits over 6 2/3 innings of a 4-2 defeat. He fell to 0-1 with a 7.45 ERA in three appearances against Atlanta.

Omar Infante, who homered off Dickey last month, is 5 for 7 against him. Infante had two hits Monday to increase his average to .483 (14 for 29) against the Mets this season.

The Braves might need a strong night at the plate with Derek Lowe (10-9, 4.58) on the hill. The right-hander hasn't made it through six innings since July 5, and is 1-1 with a 6.19 ERA in three starts since the All-Star break.

Lowe gave up four runs over five innings Thursday in a 5-3 loss at Washington.

"Mistakes here and there are always going to get you," Lowe told the Braves' official website. "It seems like one pitch in my last four games ends up costing you a couple of runs and ultimately the game."

The Mets are hardly the ideal opponent for Lowe, who is 2-4 with a 7.22 ERA in eight starts versus New York since 2007.

Braves All-Star second baseman Martin Prado, who's been out since Friday, was placed on the disabled list Monday with a broken right pinkie.

The Red Sox hope their one-time ace can continue his resurgence Tuesday night, but they'll likely be without Kevin Youkilis as they continue their four-game series with the Indians.

Any momentum from back-to-back walk-off victories over Detroit didn't help the Red Sox (60-46) win Monday's opener against Cleveland, which withstood a late comeback attempt in its 6-5 victory.

The Red Sox had won 19 of 24 in the regular season against the Indians (45-61) before losing the final two games of a four-game set in Cleveland on June 9 and 10 and Monday's series opener. They haven't lost four in a row to the Indians since 2001.

"I think for the rest of the year you're going to see a lot of people playing with no fear," Cleveland outfielder Shelley Duncan said. "I think we'll be fun to watch."

Beckett (2-1, 6.33 ERA) has also struggled against the Indians. He beat them twice during the 2007 AL championship series, but is 2-4 with a 6.56 ERA in the regular season against Cleveland.

But he has posted a 2.84 ERA in two starts since returning, pitching seven innings in a 7-3 win over the Angels on Wednesday to pick up his first victory since April 10.

"We've still got more guys to get healthy, but a lot of us are coming back now," Beckett said. "I feel like I'm strong."

Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury are still on the disabled list, and Youkilis needs an MRI after leaving the series opener with a jammed right thumb.

"He's pretty sore," Boston manager Terry Francona said. "He's had a bone a bruise in that area. It swelled up quickly."

The game was also costly for the Indians, who lost catcher Carlos Santana to a knee injury. The standout rookie collided with Boston's Ryan Kalish while blocking home plate and tagging Kalish out and will return to Cleveland for tests.

That leaves Chris Gimenez to catch David Huff (2-9, 6.04) in his first start since June 19, when he walked six and allowed five runs in five innings of a 6-4 loss at Pittsburgh.

The left-hander was sent to Triple-A Columbus the next day, and he regrouped by going 6-0 with a 3.80 ERA in seven minor league starts.

"He has pitched well and still has room for improvement of the fastball command," manager Manny Acta told the Indians' official website. "He is working hard, listening and doing what we want him to do."

Huff pitched six solid innings against Boston on June 8, but lost 3-2. He gave up three unearned runs in the fourth after outfielder Trevor Crowe dropped a fly ball to give the Red Sox an extra out.
